I’ve been waiting for news about The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance ever since the prequel series was announced last year, and today’s news was like a tidal wave.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is the upcoming prequel to the 1982 film The Dark Crystal, which told the story of a world split between the gentle Mystics and the cruel Skeksis, and a prophecy that a Gelfling will heal the Crystal of Truth and and save the world. A 10-episode first season of Age of Resistance has been greenlit by Netflix and focuses on three Gelfling who learn the truth about the Skeksis’ power and seek to encourage a rebellion. Up until now, there hasn’t been much released about the show. Even the panel at New York Comic Con was sparse, simply featuring a behind-the-scenes video that had been previously been released and a few tidbits of information from director Louis Leterrier and creative executive producer Lisa Henson, daughter of the late Jim Henson.

Today’s news, however, is massive. They’ve released list of actors lending their voices to the project, and there are some big names in the cast. The three Gelfling heroes who are the cornerstone of the story will be voiced by Taron Egerton (Rian), Nathalie Emmanuel (Deet), and Anya Taylor-Joy (Brea). Other actors who will voice Gelflings are Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham-Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander.

Meanwhile, Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, and Jason Isaacs will be the voices behind the Skeksis, and Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg will lend their voices to the Mystics.

Donna Kimball will voice Aughra.

We’ve also gotten some promotional images of our three main heroes.

Fans will be pleased to learn that once again the characters are puppets controlled by puppeteers. It seems that the only CGI that was used was digitally removing the puppeteers from the shot thanks to green screen.

In the 1982 film, we are told of a prophecy that a Gelfling would heal the crystal and save Thra, which lead to the Skeksis hunting down all of the Gelfling. Comments made by Henson at NYCC imply that we’ll be shown was Thra was like before the crystal cracked.

In the original movie, Jen and Kira stop at the Wall of Destiny and they see the ruins of what was once a beautiful Gefling culture, and we took that as a jumping of point for the whole series.

There is as of yet no release date for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
