And The Fangirl’s Rejoiced: Dominic Cooper will return as Howard Stark for Agent Carter

It’s been rumored for a while now, but the more time went without word, the more sceptical the fangirls became. Put away your worries and break out the fondue because Marvel just confirmed that the lovely Dominic Cooper will be returning as Howard Stark in Marvel’s Agent Carter. Fans have been speculation about Cooper’s return – whether or not he would be recast for the series – since Agent Carter was announced, so it’s nice to finally get official confirmation.

Cooper first played Howard Stark (yes that’s Tony’s father) in Captain America: The First Avenger. He also had a cameo in Marvel One Shot: Agent Carter, which was a test of sorts for the upcoming Agent Carter series.

But enough about that, let’s see what the fangirls had to say. As usual they were pretty excited:

“Big Daddy Stark is back!” – @ccstarburst

“YAS! GIMME THAT HOWARD STARK #AgentCarter” – @youthinkmemad

“I am so happy right now, like I can’t even begin to describe just how happy I am. I cannot wait for Agent Carter!!!I am so happy right now, like I can’t even begin to describe just how happy I am. I cannot wait for Agent Carter!!!” – falling-for-flynns-smolder

#AgentCarter is gonna be SO good!! So excited that Howard Stark is now gonna be in it!! Peggy’s gonna rock it!!” – @lizzoturner

“Finally! All the pieces are coming together now #AgentCarter” – @KaseyCasablanca

“In a tweet that surprises no one, I will talk about how Marvel finally adding Dominic Cooper to the #AgentCarter line up makes me VERY happy” – @atvgeek82

“HE’S RETURNING! YES! DOMINIC COOPER IS COMING BACK AS HOWARD STARK #AgentCarter” – @ThatGirlChowder

“Dominic Cooper is going to be on Agent Carter reprising his role as Howard Stark my life has been made” – @_smileysteph

“OMG Uguise!!! Dominic Cooper! I thought I couldn’t get more excited about #AgentCarter But I was wrong. <insert flailing gif here>” – @HeatherMcGovern

“Welcome back Mr.Stark!” – @sashamarie_md

“Dominic Cooper joining Agent Carter!!Fondue for everyone!” – @handbagbaby

Of course there are still those that are disappointed by the lack of women in these casting announcements. “They’re going to make Peggy a Smurfette in her own show, aren’t they” wrote inkasrain on Tumblr. “Please cast more women in #AgentCarter, please cast more women in #AgentCarter, please cast more women in #AgentCarter, please, PLEASE…” pleaded @inkasrain on Twitter.

I understand their frustration, and if Marvel’s Agent Carter doesn’t announced at least one other woman as a series regular I will be pretty upset. But, as I said last time I talked about Agent Carter casting, everything they have said about the show so far indicates that they are trying to show Peggy dealing with a male dominated environment, which means they’re going to have to cast a few men. As placesbetween put it on Tumblr:

“the point of having so few females in Agent Carter is to highlight how few women were in professions like that after the war. Women who worked during the war were completely locked out, which is why the 1950s Housewife propaganda was so extreme and so prominent. Men wanted their jobs back and viewed women as a threat. The idea of family and women birthing babies became EVERYTHING so that they could eliminate this threat.”

If they actually show this struggle in a realistic way (while still having Peggy kick Nazi butt every week) then I will be a very happy camper.

What about you guys? Are you excited about the confirmation that Dominic Cooper will be back as Howard Stark?
