Artists Paco Medina and Juan Vlasco take the New Avengers to Civil War II

New Avengers 12 Cover Civil War II

While New Avengers is truly an entertaining comic book series to read, the art style leaves a lot to be desired. However, things seem to be taking a turn for the better (at least art wise) once the series enters Civil War II.

I was hooked on New Avengers from the very start. Not only did Al Ewing create an interesting team of young superheroes (I still don’t know why Squirrel Girl’s a member) he also created a lot of mystery behind their leader’s true intentions. I’m not sure what Sunspot wants to prove but I’m definitely going to stick around to find out.

With the pacing, characters, and the plot working in the series’ favor it was the art that stood out, and not in a good way. Artist Gerardo Sandoval is just not doing justice to the vibe of the series and his character designs are awful.

Yes, I said it. I had to. His Squirrel Girl looks bad, and he ruined Wiccan and Hulkling for me. He ruined one of my major OTPs! There shall be no forgiveness!

Things changed for the better when Marcus To came onboard for the ‘Standoff’ tie-in issues and I was glad to finally see an art style I could enjoy. After his run, Sandoval returned and again I had to endure looking at an unrecognizable Wiccan and Hulkling who looked like a zombie-ogre.

With Civil War II starting next month the series has brought in artists Paco Medina and Juan Vlasco. One look at the art style and you can already tell the tie-in is going to be great just because of the art alone. Check out the amazing preview. Now, you can point out that both Hulkling and Hawkeye have a similar looking uniform but you know what? They might have the same tailor. So, stop judging and enjoy the cool visuals.

I can’t wait to start reading the Civil War II tie-in and see what role the New Avengers play in it. I’m not sure if Paco and Juan will continue working on the series once the tie-in concludes but I hope they do. If not, then at least give me Marcus To back.

What are your thoughts about the art style being used in New Avengers? Let us know!
