Behold! The First Trailer for “Rogue One”!

Rogue One trailer

With the release of the trailer for the upcoming Star Wars not-quite-spinoff Rogue One, we get our first real look at the epic extended universe.

The extended universe is one of the best things about Star Wars, because it allows you to explore more than just the lives of the few main characters from the original trilogy. With the prequels providing much-needed (albeit, perhaps, poorly executed) backstory, and the new trilogy answering questions as to “what happened next”, films like Rogue One will show us even more about the galaxy far, far away.

Rogue One is the first movie in the Star Wars Anthology, which focuses on a few stand-alone films, the others being Han Solo and Boba Fett adventures. These films are intended as origin stories and will not crossover with the new trilogy (or old trilogy, as the case may be). As producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has previously stated, “The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that [George Lucas] created.”

Rogue One takes a canon event in the Star Wars universe and expands upon it without really using any of the characters from the original trilogy (except for Mon Mothma). In this case, we return to a time slightly before the events of A New Hope and follow a group of Rebel fighters whose mission is to find out just what exactly this Death Star thing is that the Empire is building and how to destroy it.

Check out the teaser trailer, which was released this morning:

One notable thing about Rogue One is that it is the first film (indeed, probably one of the first stories period) in the Star Wars franchise that features absolutely no Jedi. Another is that, like The Force Awakens, the main character is a woman – Jyn Erso, played by Academy-Award nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). Other cast members include Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk.

Rogue One is set to hit theaters December 16, 2016.

What do you guys think?
