Is a B.A.P.S Sequel Happening? I Sure Hope So!

halle berry BAPS sequel

Director Robert Townsend sent a tweet asking if people would be interested in watching a new installment of B.A.P.S. There are a lot of reboots and sequels going on in Hollywood, and while many don’t work, I hope we get a sequel to B.A.P.S soon!

For those who might not know, B.A.P.S was released back in 1997 and it was not well received. Some could argue white critics couldn’t understand what the film was going for. Anyway, over the decades, the Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle-led film has become a comedic cult classic in the African-American community. I have watched it numerous times, too.

I am excited to see how Berry’s Nisi and Desselle’s Mickey have grown over the years. Both were very ambitious and independent women. So, I’m all for them taking over the world in the sequel.

Now, I get there are some who are of the opinion that the film promoted African-American stereotypes and how the over-the-top narrative won’t suit the current environment. I understand such an opinion; however, I would like to direct you to two very successful TV shows, Empire and Clawswhich feature over-the-top storylines and fashion choices without compromising a character’s integrity.

That is why I think, if done right, B.A.P.S (with Berry and Desselle) can work in the modern world. And considering the kind of characters Nisi and Mickey are, there are numerous social topics they can comment on.

If a sequel is going to happen, I want as much of the original cast and crew to return. Ruth E. Carter, who did phenomenal work on Black Panther, designed the costumes for B.A.P.S. It will be amazing to have her back for the next installment.

I want this sequel to happen so bad. I will even settle for a Netflix movie or a miniseries at this point!

Talking of reboots, Halle Berry has been working on a Boomerang TV series.

Are you a fan of B.A.P.S? Will you watch a sequel? Let us know.
