As if I needed another reason to be excited about the Boomerang TV series that will premiere on BET sometime next year. Not only has the Halle Berry and Lena Waithe executive-produced series found its main leads, but a queer character named Ari is also part of the regular cast.

Tequan Richmond (Everybody Hates Chris) and Tetona Jackson (All Night) will play the leads in the upcoming 10-episode Boomerang TV series which is a continuation of the 1992 film. Along with Richmond and Jackson, Leland Martin (All Night) and Lala Milan (Claws) have joined the cast as series regulars.

The show is executive produced by Halle Berry, Lena Waithe and co-produced by BET Networks and Paramount Television.

Richmond will play Bryson. He is the son of Jacqueline Boyer and has been described as someone who is resourceful, tough and charming. “Raised by a single mother, he’s self-assured and doesn’t hide his vulnerability. Every bit as driven as Simone, Bryson wants to make his mark on this world.”

Jackson will play Marcus and Angela’s daughter Simone. She is “privileged, beautiful, cool and driven to a fault. She has an easy confidence that she inherited from her father, but a down-to-earth, chill vibe, which she inherited from her mother. The shadow of both her parents looms large and she is eager to step out of it and make a name for herself.”

As for the rest, Martin will play Ari. He is a digital producer with big dreams. Ari is “handsome, charming, effortlessly confident, and has an edge and swagger that is completely disarming. Ari doesn’t believe in labels. He’s an equal opportunist when it comes to dating.”

Milan will play the role of Tia. She is a misguided performance artist with high ambitions. Tia is “a classically trained dancer who wants to topple the patriarchy. She’s charismatic and wildly unique. Tia is an activist at heart, but she doesn’t mind being a little ratchet every now and then.”

Ben Cory Jones (Underground, Insecure) is attached to the series as showrunner. He will executive produce the series along with Berry and Waithe and Rishi Rajani for Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions.

The pilot episode has been co-written by Waithe and Jones. The pilot, the finale, and additional episodes will be directed by Dime Davis (The Chi).

BET allowed James LaRosa to depict the unashamed queerness of his characters on Hit the Floor season 4. So, let’s see how Ari comes across as a series regular.
