Brooklyn Is Getting a Captain America Statue

Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers proudly represents his home borough of Brooklyn on a consistent basis. In fact, the most realistic thing about the airport fight in Captain America: Civil War was that neither Steve nor Peter Parker could get through the whole thing without announcing they were from New York City.

To honor the legacy of Captain America, for his 75th anniversary, Brooklyn has announced that they will be erecting a gigantic bronze statue of him.

I mean, Marvel Comics canon has always specified that Steve was actually born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, but I live in Brooklyn so I am totally on board with this giant statue idea. Clearly the Marvel Cinematic Universe has won out, as the statue will depict Captain America holding his shield up and the base is engraved with a quote from Captain America: The First Avenger: “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.”

The statue – which is 13 feet tall and literally weighs a ton – will make its debut at San Diego Comic-Con before making the cross-country trek and landing at its permanent place of residence in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. There will be a special dedication ceremony on August 10th.

Please tell me that Chris Evans will be at the dedication ceremony. Or San Diego Comic-Con. Please tell me that there will be pictures of him next to this statue.

Keep an eye on Marvel’s various forms of social media, as they intend to keep fans apprised of Cap’s location along his post-SDCC route via Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Comicave Studios – which, along with Marvel artists, designed the statue – will be selling limited-edition replicas in their online store. You can buy one of 750 12-inch bronze replicas or one of 100 made-to-order 35-inch pewter replicas.

Said Paul Gitter, senior vice president of licensing for Marvel at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media:

We hope that when fans see the statue, they will think back to a favorite comic book, treasured action figure or even be transported back to a special time and place in their lives where Captain America’s values played influence.

There has been some controversy surrounding Cap lately, but the MCU version of him is as yet untainted, and this statue is obviously MCU Cap. I’m still proud to call Cap my favorite superhero, but that may be because Chris Evans is my Cap, and Chris Evans IS Cap, so there you go.

What do you guys think of this news? Rest assured I will do my best to track down this statue at SDCC for all of you! And then once it lands in Brooklyn, you can bet that I will pay homage to it there, as well.
