Lead Of The CW’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” May Not Be White!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina The CW Archie Riverdale

If the casting description for the female lead in The CW’s take on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is anything to go by, it seems that our teenage witch will be a POC and that’s a good thing!

The upcoming series is being described as a Riverdale spinoff. There are rumors that Sabrina might show up in Riverdale soon for a quick introduction and for setting up Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Sabrina Spellman was created by writer George Gladir and designed by Dan DeCarlo. She made her first appearance back in Archie’s Mad House #22 in October of 1962. While Sabrina has been depicted as a white girl, it’s nice to know that The CW is open to changing her ethnicity.

Here’s casting description from That Hashtag Show:

Female, Open Ethnicity, to play 16.

Sabrina is an half-human, half-witch, empowered young woman just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Sabrina’s intelligent, compassionate, and brave to the point of recklessness.

She is fiercely loyal to her family and friends; wickedly funny and in the middle of a star-crossed romance with her classmate Harvey Kinkle. She challenges witch-doctrine at every turn. She is all that stands between us and the Forces of Darkness that threaten our world.

While I was already excited for a live-action adaptation I’m even more excited now that Sabrina might be played by a POC actress. Good job, The CW! Good job!

Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the first issue of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was released in October 2014.

As far as production is concerned, Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as executive producer along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Lee Toland Krieger and Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater.

There’s no official release for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina yet. However, it plans to make its debut during the 2018-19 TV season. Considering how messy of a show Riverdale is, having Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as a dark supernatural companion series sounds perfect.

Sabrina isn’t the only witch coming to The CW. The network is developing a DC Comics adaptation of Project 13 with Elizabeth Banks as an executive producer.

The show will have Traci Thirteen as the lead, a witch capable of tapping into any city’s magic. She’s also a lesbian in the comics. So, let’s see if the TV series will stay true to her sexuality.

Feel free to share your thoughts about Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and even Project 13.
