Countdown to ConCarolinas

Next up on The Geekiary’s Convention Calendar is ConCarolinas, taking place this coming weekend at the Hilton Charlotte University Place in Charlotte, North Carolina. ConCarolinas is a multi-genre, multi-media convention – though generally labeled a sci-fi convention, it actually covers all speculative fiction (fantasy and horror as well as science fiction).

Unfortunately ConCarolinas has sold out of their full-weekend and Saturday tickets – and let’s not lie, that’s probably thanks to the fact that their guest of honor is none other than George R. R. Martin! However, there are still some Friday and Sunday day badges available, and those can be purchased at the door on their respective days for just $20 each. That said, they will be capping attendance, so if you don’t have a ticket and plan on dropping by on either Friday or Sunday, I highly suggest you get there early – walk in tickets can be purchased beginning at 2 PM on Friday and at 9 AM on Sunday.

GeorgeRRMartin_zps7d7ae42dThe Man Himself (why, Mr. Martin, of course) has several events scheduled at the convention, from taking part in the Opening Ceremonies on Friday at 3:30 PM to readings on Friday at 5 PM and Saturday at 11:30 AM and 5:30 PM. There’s also an autograph session (only one item allowed per person) on Saturday at 3 PM, and another reading tentatively scheduled for Sunday morning at 10:30 AM, depending on GRRM’s personal schedule. Line-up for all of these events begins one hour prior to their start times.

There are plenty of panels on the schedule to keep attendees busy, though, including a well-rounded writer’s track, some talks on podcasting, cosplay workshops, and more. Attendees can even purchase advance tickets for the two big workshops – a Prosthetic Transfers Hands On Class at 4:30 PM on Friday and a Foam Fabrications Demo Class at 11:30 AM on Sunday. Both of these classes will be led by RJ Haddy from Sy Fy’s show Face/Off.

Additionally, if you’re interested in participating in the costume contest (which will be taking place on Saturday) you can still sign up online. Otherwise, I simply suggest checking out the full schedule and planning out your days…I know I already have, and sadly I’ll still probably miss some of the things that I want to attend! But then, to me, that’s the sign of a great convention – one that has so much to offer, you could never see it all…and usually this means that attendees end up returning year after year.

I know I for one can’t wait to see what it’s all about…and thankfully there are only a few more days to wait!

  1. This looks awesome. One of our writers (Meg/@donnersun) is in that area, she might have to check it out. Either way we look forward to your coverage!
