Creatures of the Night: Ian Bohen Q&A Recap

IMG_0518

This past weekend, four of our Teen Wolf faves – Holland Roden, Ian Bohen, Max Carver and Sinqua Walls made the long (and sometimes perilous) journey to the land down under, otherwise known as Australia. As I live here at the ass end of the earth, I trundled along to the first Teen Wolf-themed convention in Sydney on Sunday. And since most of you are not in Sydney, I thought I’d recap exactly what went down (or the interesting bits anyway). I’m nice like that. During his hour long Q&A, Ian Bohen (Peter Hale) regaled us with stories from the set, told us his thoughts on Peter and Malia’s relationship and tried to convince us that Peter hasn’t always been a bad guy. Here are the highlights:

Ian Bohen is incredibly personable and gorgeous, of course. He was also rather verbose; he had a lot to say. He gushed about the Teen Wolf set: “The people that are there just make it the best place I have ever worked, and it’s really odd to have a cast that gets along the way we do. I’m so lucky, I’m so fortunate to have these guys.” And he did an on point impression of Orny Adams (Coach Finstock) after he picked the Carver twins over him as funniest person on the set. He also talked about how he loved shooting on the Hale house set in Atlanta because, “when the set is real you can feel like it’s a real place and you don’t have to pretend… that set always made me feel very Peter-y.”

He desperately wants to direct an episode of Teen Wolf but there’s a long line of people more qualified than him but he did say that he’s working on something with Daniel Sharman (Isaac) that we’re apparently going to really like. Tyler Hoechlin (Derek Hale) is his best friend on set and if he could say one thing to Peter he would say: “Pete, I’m not mad at you, I understand but maybe we should think some of these things through before we actually go full throttle but I do like where your heads at.”

Because I can’t do his words justice, here’s a collection of the most interesting quotes from the event.

On Peter and Malia:

“I think Peter is very interested in cultivating the relationship with Malia and getting her to trust him because nobody in town trusts Peter and she has only heard bad things. She hasn’t actually witnessed any so I think he thinks he’s got a pretty good chance of having a true ally. Someone that he can love and care about; that he doesn’t need to manipulate.”

“We have some really great scenes together [with] Shelley and I coming up that we both like a lot… there’s a very strong through line of good and evil in this show – bad guys/good guys – and she’s got to figure out which way she’s gonna go… Peter’s going to have some ideas about what he wants and we’re gonna watch that dance between the two of them.”

On Peter’s past:

“People always think that he was a psychopath before hand and he was terrible and this gave him an excuse to do it. I think – and this is just my opinion – that moment was like a psychological break for him and it literally turned him crazy. It was that traumatic to have his whole family burned and he’s lost everything.”

“If [the fire] hadn’t happened, I see him as a guy that’s looking after the family: he’s got a bunch of money, he’s taking care of the legacy. He’s trying to keep the hunters away. That he’s maybe even the patriarch of the family and I see him as a completely different person and that this guy that we saw is just like a nightmare train wreck version of bad circumstance. I have to think that, otherwise I would judge the character and hate him and I can’t do that.”

On Peter and Lydia:

“I think that he does have a power over her and everyone that he has turned in some matter or another and I don’t even think she knows it. I think it’s more of a hypnotic suggestion in her mind. And that way I get to use her and I think I will always have that sort of control over her, which is interesting. We’ve got a really great scene coming up in 10 maybe because we haven’t gotten to interact as much this year but you’re going to see some really cool stuff.”

1On Peter and Derek:

“It seems to be suggested that there is a scale sort of shifting power-wise. As far as our relationship goes, that’s okay because we’re still getting along pretty good. but it will probably not be okay later.”

On Peter and Braeden:

“What I decide is that I hate her, so I’m glad that came across. I think Peter hates the fact – he’s like I have to have this person rescue me? So from then on… So every time we have a scene together we always have these vitriolic hatred for her and I’m trying to play it up more.”

On Stiles and Malia:

“Ironically, I would trust [Malia] with Stiles more than anyone else. I think I respect Stiles’s character more than anybody…I think Peter, he loves that kid. So if it had to be anybody he would want it to be him.”

On Cora’s return:

“I think that it probably screwed up his plan because it reminded him of his life before hand and the person that he was… that makes it harder to be the guy that he has to be now, which is a vicious killer. Because he’s got this symbol of youth and goodness and innocence… at the same time I’ve got to take care of her. That’s why I’m like Derek, take her away. Then I can get back to doing what I do best, which is being sexy.”

Will Peter choose revenge or power?

“Wouldn’t it be great if he could do both at the same time? That’s all I’m going to say about it. The next 5 episodes are going to be so awesome. You guys are gonna love it. A lot of questions are going to be answered and that one too.”

And the most important question of the day – How many v-necks does Peter have?

“He’s got a simple colour pallet but he’s probably got 40 in the closet, just all pressed and most of them really look identical but he can take many, many minutes to pick the right colour of white or black to put on. V-necks, how did that happen?”
