It’s happening, Internet.

After years of rumors, fan-created trailers, a disappointing rendition of an utterly unrecognizable Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and some leaked badass test footage, it’s finally been officially announced.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Twentieth Century Fox has greenlit the X-Men spin-off, Deadpool. Meaning that the fan favorite (and this fangirl’s favorite Marvel character) Merc with the Mouth will finally headline his own much-deserved movie.

The so far untitled Deadpool film has sat in development purgatory for years with fans all but sacrificing virgins to appease the movie gods to get Wade his own feature film. All seemed lost as years passed since Ryan Reynold’s disappointing turn as Wade in 2009, though he was quick to insist that he loved this character and was passionate about telling Deadpool’s story accurately.

Recently, leaked test footage staring Ryan Reynolds as Wade arrived on the Internet, and though the footage had been shot several years ago, it sparked frantic excitement on social media. In an interview with the Niagara Falls Review, Reynold stated, “The movie has been in a state of limbo for a while. There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, ‘Oh, so we weren’t crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.’ It’s interesting to see the power of the Internet. It’s awe-inspiring, actually. And it’s neat that Twitter and Facebook and Instagram can move mountains when used in the right way.”

Those involved in the creation of a Deadpool solo film, who loved Wade as much as we do, assured fans that the script would not be family friendly, much like our foul-mouthed and irreverent anti-hero.

Of course, studios view violent R-rated action flicks as a waste of time. Just imagine the amount of money they would lose without that golden PG-13 rating. What’s more, Wade, though a beloved character to his fans, is essentially an unknown name to mass media at large. Sure, there’s been a Daredevil movie (not exactly Spider-Man), but an R-rated film with a talkative and horribly disfigured mercenary who breaks the fourth wall more than he shoots people? Not exactly screaming dollar signs.

What’s more, Deadpool is not a property of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This can be viewed as either a kiss of death (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) or a chance to break free from the Marvel/Disney creative stronghold and craft something fresh and invigorating (X-Men: First Class). For my money, Wade doesn’t belong in the bright-eyed, Disneyified MCU. He’s dark, he’s damaged, he’s violent, and his sense of humor is both more sinister and over-the-top slapsticky than wisecracking comic relief favorite, Tony Stark. Wade could only exist in the MCU if he made fun of it and promptly tried to kill all of its inhabitants, and the last thing Marvel wants to do is destroy their MCU cash cow.

Right now, very little is known about the upcoming and untitled Deadpool film, except that it is due to hit theaters on February 12, 2016 (just in time for Valentine’s day) and will be directed by Tim Miller, who so far has only directed short films.

Screen Shot 2014-09-18 at 8.54.30 PM In fact, even Ryan Reynolds has not signed a deal to star. Though based on his enthusiasm for the project, stretching all the back to 2003, it would be a massive surprise if he did not sign on.

After all, in an interview he did with Total Film, he claimed, “I know the character so well, but more than that, I know how to do it.”

This Deadpool fangirl, who has loved Wade more than any other Marvel characters and depended upon him like very few other fictional character, nearly screamed aloud at this news. For a long time, I had accepted the fact that I would never see Wade on the big screen and was content with Nolan North’s solid voiceover performance in “Hulk Vs.” Now, with the knowledge that Wade will get his own chance to shine, it feels rather overwhelming. He deserves that moment in the spotlight. Let’s just hope those involved show him the respect he never seems to get in the comic book universe.

Tell us what you think below! Are you excited to see Deadpool star in his own film? What would you like to see happen in the film? Is Ryan Reynolds the right fit for the role?
