Fans Are Having Way Too Much Fun Casting Captain Marvel

Captain-Marvel

Those that understand Carol Danvers’ impact on comics fans – particularly women – probably aren’t surprised by the enthusiasm for this upcoming movie. And for those who haven’t experienced Carol-fever before, it’s kind of difficult to describe her importance – but you’ll understand when you see thousands of little girls dressed as Captain Marvel on Halloween in 2018. Unfortunately, the fervent rush of fan casting also sheds light on the unfortunate lack of diversity in superhero films. There are so many amazing actresses, and not enough parts for them to play.

For those of you who are concerned, I think it is possible to bask in the excitement of the upcoming Captain Marvel film while still acknowledging that we have a long way to go. People can speculate about potential casting choices for Carol Danvers while wondering why a solo Black Widow film hasn’t been announced or whose idea it was to make Ant-Man. At the moment, the potential in fan-casting Carol is as exciting as the lack of a Black Widow movie is disappointing. And until an official announcement is made, anyone could be Captain Marvel – and fans are taking advantage of that possibility in their fan-casting fun.

Generally, the Internet’s go-to Carol Danvers has been Katee Sackoff, and it’s pretty clear why: she’s got the look, and she’s Starbuck. No other explanation is necessary. She might be a little obvious, but there’s no doubt she would make a fantastic Captain Marvel.

Since the Captain Marvel movie was announced, the fan favorite has become pretty clear. Natalie Dormer could play a shoe and make it work, so I’m quite happy for Hollywood to cast her in every single role ever…and most fans seem to agree with that.

Of course, just because Carol is blonde in the comics doesn’t mean she has to be in the movie. The casting suggestions for Captain Marvel have been surprisingly diverse – even those by the big entertainment websites. MTV posted a rousing argument for Kerry Washington as Captain Marvel – naturally this upset the racists, but quite a few fans actually got behind the idea.

Jessica Chastain – who had already been suggested as a potential Carol Danvers – caused a stir when she told MTV: “We’ve talked about aligning our forces in the future…And here’s the thing with me…If you’re going to be in a superhero movie, you only get one chance. You’re that character forever. So why do a superhero movie and play the boring civilian?” She later denied the Captain Marvel connection on Twitter: “Oops uh oh….I’ve never had talks about Captain Marvel. Was referring to a different film from over a year ago, in my recent MTV interview.” But hey, we’ve been lied to before…

Even some actors are getting into the fan casting fun. Viking’s Kathryn Winnick posted this piece of fanart on her Instagram:

And the fun doesn’t end there, the possibilities are almost endless…

Other popular suggestions include Rinko Kikuchi, Dichen Lachman, Nicole Beharie, Yvonne Strahovski, Laverne Cox, and Charlize Theron. So far much of the fanart has focused on the white women, which is a little disappointing. There’s only so long before the official announcement is made, so let’s make the most of the possible diversity!

With so much potential available, there is very little chance of Marvel stuffing up the casting of Carol Danvers. Even if fans don’t warm to her right away, Marvel have been pretty spot on with their casting thus far, so they’ve earned a certain amount of trust. Although that trust might be lost with the release of Ant-Man…because really who wants to see an Ant-Man movie that doesn’t involve Jane Van Dyne? Unless it turns out to be an elaborate trick to distract fans from the Black Widow movie they are about to “Beyonce drop”, then Ant-Man could be Marvel’s first flop.

When there are so many fantastic female actresses out there just waiting for a superhero role of their own, there’s no more time to waste on these boring white men.

  1. I was all about Katee Sackhoff until someone said Gwendoline Christie and then I was like “OH YES GIVE THIS TO ME NOW.” Sorry Katee. But yes, I think they’re in a target-rich environment for casting this part. It will be hard to not pick a good fit.

…and I know what you mean about Ant-Man. Even before I heard Janet wasn’t going to be in it, I wasn’t incredibly interested. It’s probably the first Marvel movie since Iron Man that they’re going to have to actually convince me it’s going to be awesome instead of me taking their word for it.

  2. Anna Torv, all the way. She has the right kind of quiet intensity that is important when casting superheroes, you need someone who can carry the flashy moments while also grounding the character in a certain amount of realism and emotional depth.
