Funko Pop! Reveals Whitewashed Figures For “Teen Wolf” and “The 100” Characters

Teen Wolf The 100 Funko Pop 2017

London Toy Fair just revealed a new Funko Pop! line for Teen Wolf and apparently Scott McCall is white!

With Funko Pops being all the rage right now, I’ve had my fingers crossed for Teen Wolf to get its turn. The show has problems but I’m all for owning little figures of the characters. The upcoming Teen Wolf Funko Pop! line was revealed at the London Toy Fair and immediately my excitement was replaced by cringe.

Just look at the Pop for Scott McCall, the lead character in Teen Wolf. I guess Funko took a leaf from the show’s book about Scott’s ethnicity and proceeded to take it a step further. I mean, can he look any whiter?

Also, is it just me or does Scott’s werewolf form looks a lot like Derek? With a bit of customization you can give the figure a black jacket and recreate Sterek or Scerek scenes. Speaking of Sterek, I’m sorry, but that doesn’t look like Stiles at all. Doing a Stiles Pop with a schoolbag instead of a baseball bat is just lazy.

Coming to another whitewashed Funko Pop, the upcoming The 100 Pop line did the same thing to Raven, a Latina character. (EDIT 1/24/17: Also Bellamy, who is half-Filipino.) What is Funko’s design team thinking?

At least the company tried to get Lincoln right.

These images are concept art for lines that will release sometime in 2017. I hope that Funko gets called out for Scott’s design and they make appropriate changes in the final product. The company should also give Raven the color that she deserves.

Whitewashing is already a problem in a significant part of the media that we consume. I just don’t want a line of collectibles that I like to follow suit.

What do you think of the upcoming Pop line for Teen Wolf and The 100? Do you think Funko whitewashed these characters? Let us know.
