We’re Getting an IMAX Debut for the”Inhumans” Series

The Inhumans movie may have been pushed back until 2021 (at least!), but the series isn’t being sidelined. Marvel has announced an ABC TV series airing next fall. Plus, in an industry first, the show will premiere in movie theaters as an IMAX special feature.

Innovation isn’t exactly a new thing for Marvel. The company has been breaking rules in screen entertainment since they launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having movies that connect like comics, weaving their stories between TV shows and film, and now using theaters to showcase pilots- this is new ground. No live-action television shows have ever debuted this way. It’s the result of a very smart partnership between Marvel Television, Disney/ABC Television Group, and IMAX.

Inhumans follows a royal family from the comics that was pretty obscure before members started popping up in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this past season. The term “inhumans” refers to people whose ancestors were experimented on by the alien Kree, but most of the story is about their ruler, Black Bolt, and the other members of his clan.

The theater debut will be shot entirely with IMAX digital cameras, meaning we can expect true IMAX quality. One important note: the two episode arc which will play in theaters won’t be exactly the same as the ABC pilot version. ABC has some exclusive content for the small screen. It’s a bonus and a downside: we get a slightly different experience from each premiere but also have to see both to get everything. At least it looks like the IMAX version won’t have any exclusive story, so if you can’t swing the extra five bucks for an IMAX ticket you won’t miss any plot points.

I’ve had my issues with Marvel on a few things (looking at you real hard, Sorcerer Supreme), but I have to admit they know how to keep me excited. Every time I think I know what to expect from the combined MCU/ Marvel Television they toss out a curve ball. Fingers crossed that this goes well and we can look forward to grandiose pilots for more Marvel shows.

Marvel’s The Inhumans will air for two weeks at the beginning of next September. A list of participating IMAX theaters should be available closer to summer.
