Fans of the X-Men drama The Gifted have something to be happy about. Fox has confirmed The Gifted season 2. However, what the Disney/Fox merger will mean for the series is still unknown.

Fox has gone ahead and renewed The Gifted for a second season before the season one 2-episode finale that’ll air on January 15, 2018. The announcement was made by the network during its portion of the winter TCA press tour.

The Gifted has been getting solid ratings for Fox. The X-Men drama ranked at No. 3 in the list of top new dramas for the 2017-2018 season. Furthermore, the show averages a 2.0/7 in Live +7 ratings. It is also up 18% over the year-ago time period. The show gets an average of 8.3 million total viewers across platforms, which goes on to show a +146% increase from the Live + Same Day numbers. (via Deadline)

The show focuses on the Strucker family on the run from the government because Lauran and Andy Strucker manifest mutant powers. They are helped by the mutant underground.

While the show does boast POC cast members – and includes Sean Teale from the queer-thriller B&B  the plot wasn’t very interesting to me. Maybe I’ll think differently when I decide to binge-watch the series after the season one finale airs this month. Maybe I, too, will feel excited about The Gifted season 2?

The Gifted is produced by 20th Century Fox Television in association with Marvel Television. But as far as the Disney/Fox merger is concerned, (as of yet) nothing has been shared about the future of Marvel-based TV shows from Fox. Maybe they’ll find a home on Disney’s streaming service?

According to Fox CEOs/co-chairmen, Dana Walden and Gary Newman, the network will be rebranding itself as New Fox. Shows like Empire and The Simpsons are presumably to remain with New Fox.

80 percent of the programming in all of New Fox will be live and sports,” said Walden. She also added that “the network will continue to do entertainment programming” with outside studios such as Sony and Warner Bros. having “a better chance at getting their shows on the network.” (via CBR)
