Glee 5×14 Review: New New York

Glee finally moved to New York full-time this week. I have been waiting a long time for it to happen and I was not disappointed with the results. The show doesn’t have the magic of Season 1 and 2 but if it moves the way it did in New New York things might be starting to look up for the show.

The episode showed a time-skip of some months and everything was not perfect for most of the characters. Rachel (Lea Michele) received a town car and it got to her head. She entered her diva mode and became very unlikeable. I was glad the show didn’t drag that storyline out and she returned to her normal self, helping Artie who found New York life tough. I mean, who can blame him. I was shocked when his laptop got stolen and he felt vulnerable in a town that’s always on its feet. In the end, he was able to get his laptop back. The show handled the situation quite well. A new city can be scary for any newcomer let alone someone who’s in a wheelchair.

Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) had some relationship troubles. Why can’t the show just give us a happy couple for a few episodes instead of turning up the drama? I get that Kurt felt suffocated because of Blaine but I don’t think the answer to the problem was him moving out with Sam. The two boys didn’t sit down and try to work things out. I’m no expert, but I don’t think it’s very tough to sit down and talk about boundaries in an adult manner, especially when you are engaged and living together. The only mature character in the show seems to be Elliott (played marvelously by Adam Lambert). I think not being from McKinley helps him to look at and handle things rationally.

I’m still not enjoying Sam in the show. He takes away from the Kurt and Blaine time. I think the writers are using him to fall back to their previous formula: pair Kurt with Rachel and put Blaine with Sam. I want Kurt to grow out of his ‘gay best friend’ mold. I want a separate storyline where he tries to handle life as a gay teenager who is engaged and wants to make it big in New York.

The best part of the episode was Mercedes showing up. The writers better not mess with the amazing development she has gone through since leaving McKinley. Sam tried to reignite the flames between them and thank the Lord that didn’t happen. Mercedes can do much better than Sam. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on Sam. The show just needs to give him a proper storyline in order for me to like him.

Glee aired a good episode this week. Yes, I’m surprised too! I can’t wait to see how the characters handle living in New York. I missed Santana so I’m looking forward to her return. The show has rebranded itself with this episode. It would’ve been better to do this when Season 5 started, but I guess it’s better late than never.
