Fox has ordered a full season for its breakout hit Gotham, adding an additional six episodes and therefore granting its first season a total of 22 episodes, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Gotham and ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder are the two biggest new series of the season, and the article pointed out that the Batman prequel is the highest rated drama on Monday nights.

“Gotham is the first Fox series to score a full-season order this fall and only the third on all of broadcast TV. ABC handed out speedy orders for How to Get Away With Murder and Black-ish last week,” the Hollywood Reporter stated.

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 4.32.41 PMGotham had a solid lead-up promotion in the months before its premiere, and with its intriguing video promos and presence at San Diego Comic-Con it’s no wonder that Gotham has been an early success. While some argue that Batman has become stretched too thin (seen in everything from cartoons, LEGO form, video games, upcoming films, shirts, toys, etc.), there’s no denying that the Dark Knight is a favorite in the collective consciousness. Anticipation for 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (ugh, so far away!) and Ben Affleck’s portrayal of our favorite comic book hero only strengthens this love, and no doubt inspired TV viewers to tune in to Gotham. After all, for all his constant presence in pop culture, it’s not everyday we see a 12-year-old Bruce Wayne.

The next question is whether the full season of Gotham will hurt or improve its writing. It’s easy to overlook it, but 22 episodes is a lot, and there’s the added pressure of stretching a gripping storyline over the course of an entire full season. Some shows do better with shorter freshman seasons, but perhaps Gotham will be up to the task.

So tell us what you think below! What are you excited to see happen in Gotham this season?
