Gotham Season 4 Blu-ray Review: So Much Wonderful Craziness!

The fourth season of Gotham was something. New alliances were formed. Loyalties were tested. Craziness engulfed Gotham City, and so much more! With the release of Gotham: The Complete Fourth Season, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD, you can rewatch it all as well as enjoy some extra content.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Each season the writers of Gotham figure out how to make the series crazier than before. Compared to everything that has happened over the years, the first season was very tame with how characters from the Batman lore were handled.

I understand certain fan complaints about the writing being inconsistent and believe me when I say I can see all of the messiness. However, even then, Gotham is an enjoyable show in my opinion.

Binging the Gotham season 4 Blu-ray made me enjoy the episodes even more. I wouldn’t mind if this series figures out how to become a binge-able streaming show (on DC Universe, perhaps?) after the shortened fifth season premieres sometime in 2019.

One of the best things about Gotham season 4 is how it was able to (or tried to) link all of the plot threads together for an explosive finale. I appreciated how different villains were given time to shine as their stories were spread out and we were shown how their agendas connected to the rest of the crime world.

The fourth season introduced us to Sofia Falcone (Crystal Reed), Professor Pyg (Michael Cerveris), a new Poison Ivy (Peyton List), and Jerome’s twin brother Jeremiah (Cameron Monaghan). It was fun to see the new villains interact with the already established cast including Penguin, Riddler, Tabitha, Jerome, and Barbara.

Also, seeing Cameron Monaghan pull double duty was impressive. He played both Jerome and Jeremiah, offering us two different kinds of Jokers.

Baby Bruce also worked toward his destiny. He did end up being very annoying during a portion of the season when he deciced to act like a spoiled brat. But thankfully he came back to his senses. His relationship with Kitty Selina also developed further. However, I was disappointed to see our young Catwoman not having much of a personal arc this season.

In other disappointing story elements, the Barbara and Ra’s al Ghul arc was tediously drawn out. At least, I liked how it was concluded. So, there’s that.

The Penguin and Riddler relationship (romance?) continued being a delightful wreck. I’m looking forward to seeing how the writers decide to handle the Lee, Riddler, and Penguin triangle moving forward.

Talking about the most boring character on the show for me, James Gordon, tried to keep the GCPD running. It has been four seasons, and I am still unable to care for him.

Gotham knows it is a crazy and messy comic book-inspired series. That’s why I can appreciate it for what it is. Don’t try to make too much sense of what’s happening and you’ll be fine.

Gotham Season 4 Blu-ray release

As for the packaging of the 22-episode Gotham season 4 Blu-ray release from Waner Bros. Home Entertainment, the front has the main art with Baby Bruce and Gordon. The back has the synopsis and list of extra features.

The 4-disc Blu-ray release also includes a Digital copy. The video presentation is in your standard 1080p High Definition 16×9 1.78:1. There are a lot of scenes in Gotham occurring at night time. So, I appreciated being able to clearly see what was happening. The DTS-HD Master Audio: English 5.1 ensured I experienced no sound problems.

The extra content includes:

  • The Best of DC TV’s Comic-Con Panels San Diego 2017 – This is the same feature also present in the home release of Arrow season six, offering a look at the different DC TV show panels from SDCC 2017.
  • Solomon Grundy: Born on a Monday – A look at Butch transforming into Solomon Grundy.
  • The Sirens Take Gotham – Showcases the female characters of the show.
  • Deleted Scenes – The deleted scenes don’t add much to the overall story. However, a few of them are interesting. There’s one between Sofia and Penguin you should see. There’s also one with Gordon.

I would have liked a feature focusing on Cameron Monaghan’s work as both Jerome and Jeremiah on the show. But even though we didn’t get it in the Gotham season 4 Blu-ray release, fans will still be able to enjoy the deleted scenes and other extra content. Also, the highlight from the panel is an hour-long.

Gotham season 4 Blu-ray and DVD home releases are currently available for purchase. You can also own the entire season on Digital.

  1. The Gotham t.v. show is going to have Batman in season five at last that is what you have been waiting to happen being everything they have been doing that is the lest. They can do for the last season of the show so people can remember that they had Batman on the show after all this time and then they can come up with a Batman t.v. show itself now that Gotham t.v. show has ended and that t.v. has not had a Batman tv show in years for this day and age that is not Adam west Batman t.v. show and to give people a Batman t.v. show to grow up with again for now and put it on the c.w. that goes in for shows like Batman that have D.C. comics t.v. shows on for years now and would do better then on fox five who does not have shows like that people will see but c.w does have and people have wanted Batman t.v. show. More then Gotham t.v. show from the start and not Jim Gordon t.v. show
