Midnight, Texas 2×01 Review: Head Games

Midnight Texas Season 2 Head Games Review

The enjoyable Midnight, Texas TV show is back on NBC with a second season! ‘Head Games’ showed Manfred dealing with the repercussions of his demonic possession. Also, I don’t trust Kai and Patience at all.

I wasn’t a fan of Midnight, Texas season 1 episodes 9 and 10, which focused on the demonic Colconnar wanting Fiji because she was a witch and a virgin. It came across as a very outdated idea and I don’t like the ‘women-need-to-be-virgins-to-be-considered-pure’ narrative. However, I remained a fan of the characters and the world. So, of course, I am glad to return to the series for a second season.

‘Head Games’ picks up two months after Colconnar’s defeat and we see Manfred (Francois Arnaud) dealing with the aftermath of demonic possession. The demonic residue is slowly making its way into Manfred’s mind and it is only a matter of time before it takes over. I understood why Manfred wouldn’t tell his friends about his troubles, even though I think it was a bad decision not to.

In the relationship department, Fiji (Parisa Fitz-Henley) and Bobo (Dylan Bruce) are very cute together. They’re so cute you know something bad is going to happen to them. I also liked Olivia (Arielle Kebbel) and Lem (Peter Mensah) being happy in their married life.

Basically, both couples are in the honeymoon phase and it won’t be long before trouble strikes. As far as my opinion goes, I think Olivia sharing a psychic bond with Lem isn’t going to be something she will appreciate in the days to come considering the work she does and her background.

We also got a cute scene between Joe (Jason Lewis) and his husband Chuy (Bernardo Saracino) at the beginning of this episode. However, with Joe being attacked by demons and a new queer character named Walker Chisum (Josh Kelly) coming to help, I’m on guard.

Walker, a demon hunter, seems to admire Joe and I don’t think he will be a fan of Joe (an angel) being married to a half-demon. I wouldn’t be surprised if Walker decides to attract Joe to his side by stimulating his demon-killing instincts and then thinks of a plan to get rid of Chuy.

You leave the two alone, Walker! Leave them alone!

As for Manfred and Creek (Sarah Ramos), she understandably wants to leave Midnight after what happened to her father and brother. She is only human and I liked seeing her reach her limit. Creek can come back as the second progresses, but for now, I’m happy she has decided to take a break from all of the paranormal craziness happening around her.

Talking about the big bad in season 2, I don’t trust Kai and Patience at all. There is no reasonable explanation to open up a treatment center in Midnight unless you want to tap into dark forces. I have no idea what kind of supernatural being Kai is, but I know he isn’t a nice one. Also, I’m not comfortable with Rev (Yul Vazquez) bringing Kai to cure Manfred’s demonic problem. What if Kai now has some sort of control over Manfred? I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Some thoughts and questions

  • Can’t Joe sense Manfred’s demonic possession?
  • As if Manfred can beat Olivia in a fight!
  • Will the real Xylda return?
  • I miss Madonna. I wanted to see her again after the surprising reveal back in season one.
  • Nothing bad better happen to Chuy!
  • You all need to start watch Midnight, Texas. There are queer characters, POC cast members, and a story that knows how to strike a balance between the fun, mystery, and action of it all.
