Helix 2×7 Review: Cross-Pollination

crosspollination-2In “Cross-Pollination,” we received a lot of background information into Michael, the followers, and the island of St. Germaine; so it was actually a very satisfying episode! We were even taken back to the year 1601 to learn about Michael’s quest, and why he started working on pollination for his “life’s” work in the first place.

Julia opened the episode by continuing crosspollination-3to talk to the young immortal, Mlle. Durant, and this is in the same timeline as Alan, Sarah, Peter, and Kyle being on the island (Day 7). It seems as though back in 1601, Michael fell in love with a peasant woman who was not in love with him. He then dedicated his life to creating an orchard of apples that make mortal men infertile so only immortal men could procreate. Ilaria has been monitoring his progress so that they can control the world’s mortal population without resorting to genocide to keep Narvik from spreading. In the words of Mlle. Durant, it is “elegant.”

Can we take a moment to talk about Dr. Kyle Sommer? He is quickly developing into my favorite character on the show. Not only does he want answers, but he has the best quips of any character on television in quite a while. After being cornered in Michael’s lab, Kyle stumbles upon some old journals that show Michael’s family tree. He is starting to put all the pieces of the puzzle together! I like this because usually television within this genre have characters who are just not smart or don’t know how to figure things out. Kyle is definitely outside of the norm, and a refreshing change of pace.

Unfortunately, Sarah awoke to find her fetus gone, and she was quite angry when she discovered that Alan was the one behind it. To be fair, he was drugged, but it really does not bode well for any potential long-term relationship for these two. Speaking of Sarah, while she was trying to find the infirmary, she ended up stepping on a tooth. What is the significance of all of the teeth? I usually have a stomach of steel when it comes to gore, but random teeth showing up to be stepped on really grosses me out!

crosspollination-1Another thing, why do all of Michael’s children have names that start with A? Have I stumbled upon a spin-off of Pretty Little Liars? Speaking of Michael’s daughters, Anne showed up in the oubliette with Peter (who is still in there!), and they have a nice long chat about what the heck is going on with Michael and the followers. Peter talks Anne into becoming the heroine of the story by coming clean about everything to the rest of the followers.

The most depressing part of the episode is when Michael decides to “thin” the crop, and continues Amy and Landry’s plan by killing all of the followers. In Amy’s defense, she tried to stop Michael, but he shut her in a locker in the lab. Luckily, Kyle left her in there for good measure (ha!).

Overall, this episode was heavy on the answers (yay!), but also very strong on the gross-out factor. I hope that the writers will continue on the trend of giving us answers, and so far I like where this is headed. Helix has totally become the highlight of my Friday nights!
