Jodie Whittaker Revealed As Thirteenth Doctor
It is the moment that Whovians have been waiting on for months: the announcement of who will play the next Doctor on BBC’s Doctor Who. Speculation has been all over the place, particularly after the high-profile casting of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, and some were really hoping for a female in the title role. We got our wish! Jodie Whittaker has been revealed as playing the Thirteenth Doctor–and the first female Doctor in the series’ 54-year history.
Whittaker may not be too familiar to American audiences, but she’s had a strong presence in Broadchurch and Black Mirror, and also starred alongside John Boyega in the 2011 film Attack the Block. She will make her first appearance as the Doctor later this year in the 2017 Christmas special of Doctor Who as Capaldi exits the series.
As if this announcement weren’t exciting enough on its own, check out this cool teaser that was posted on Twitter with the reveal:

Along with the departure of Peter Capaldi in 2017, longtime showrunner Steven Moffat will also be leaving, paving the way for Whittaker and new executive producer Chris Chibnall. This opens the door to a lot of new possibilities for the series. We may also get to see Whittaker’s Doctor keep current (and openly gay) companion Bill (played by Pearl Mackie).
This is all good news for fans who were worried that the show is not diverse enough. Obviously getting a female Doctor is a huge step in the right direction, and I hope that we will continue to get more progressive casting and story lines in the future. We can only hope that Whittaker will do an amazing job of combining humor, heart, action, and adventure in the role…and create a whole new generation of Doctor Who fans!
