Joe Johnson Is Live-Tweeting Check Please And It’s Amazing

Joe Johnson OMGCP

If you’re looking for something pure in this time of great upheaval and uncertainty, US ice dancer Joe Johnson has started reading Check, Please and is live-tweeting his thoughts.

It all started yesterday, when Twitter user @hellokitty491 asked Joe Johnson if he read the hockey/figure skating web comic, suggesting that he would be a perfect Bitty. Apparently, today Joe decided to start reading, and he has been treating us to his reactions throughout the story.

He’s even giving fans his opinions on various characters.

It’s always exciting when you see celebrities be excited about pop culture. Dylan O’Brien used to tweet about The X-Factor and One Direction. Tyler Hoechlin’s Game of Thrones obsession is legendary among his fanbase (and some of us were complete goobers and bought him direwolf Funkos). It gives you a sense of kinship with your faves and makes you think that, should you ever get the opportunity to talk to them, you can have an actual conversation about shared interests. It also helps to remind you that celebrities are, you know, actual people. (Some people sometimes need that reminder.)

But it’s doubly exciting when they give attention to things that don’t really get a lot of notice in the mainstream. We at The Geekiary were thrilled when Johnny Weir started watching Yuri on Ice. Now, YoI is insanely popular, but I think anime fans can agree that the genre gets dismissed by quite a lot of people. (Not figure skaters, though! I mean, they even used “History Maker” to open the Grand Prix Final! Granted, the GPF took place in Japan. Still.)

OMGCP is popular as well; I stopped by Ngozi’s booth at both Flame Con and New York Comic Con and there was always a line of people. One girl I spoke to at Flame Con had come all the way from North Carolina just to meet Ngozi. The recent two-book deal with :01 Books and the record-breaking Kickstarter have done a lot to get Check, Please some more notice, and public figures like Joe discovering it can only help to increase its visibility. Not only is OMGCP a great comic, it portrays an LGBTQIA+ relationship that is happy and committed and honestly, just part of the story, as it should be. Anything that gets stories like this into the mainstream is okay in my book.

I’ll be looking forward to Joe Johnson’s tweets the same way I’m looking forward to new Check, Please updates. Keep them coming, Joe!
