‘The Ladybug’ Is An Enjoyable Animated Film About Following Your Dreams – DVD Review

The Ladybug DVD November Lionsgate release

The Ladybug is an enjoyable CG animated movie that follows Ruby as she escapes from her glass case in a laboratory to find happiness in Golden Canyon. It features voice work by Lisa Schwartz, Jon Heder, Haylie Duff, and Norm McDonald. The film, courtesy of Lionsgate, is currently available on DVD, Digital, and On Demand.

I was provided a free copy The Ladybug DVD for review. Opinions are my own.

If you are looking for an animated kid-friendly film which doesn’t have to do with princesses or comic book superheroes, The Ladybug could be a good choice for you.

Here’s the trailer!

The story is about a little ladybug named Ruby (YouTuber Lisa Schwartz). She has spent her life in captivity in a glass habitat in a laboratory. Ruby dreams of one day being free. She ends up meeting Master Dan, a dragonfly voiced by Jon Heder, and it leads to Ruby finding the courage to finally break out. The two then decide to make their way Golden Canyon, a bug utopia.

I liked how the writers Ma Hua, Wang Yunfei, and Ding Shi wrote Ruby’s character. Even though she is tiny, she is very courageous and determined. Her relationship with Master Dan isn’t the best. That is why it is great to see Ruby moving forward to achieve her goal even though her traveling companion is selfish. Ruby is incredibly kind, and the writers make it obvious that kindness should not be confused with weakness.

The film did remind me of Antz and A Bug’s Life but with a female lead this time around. Even though she is a fictional ladybug, I do think she can still help teach kids some important lessons about hope, positive thinking, and kindness. The film also shows that while trying to make your dreams come true is a good thing, you don’t have to walk over others to get what you want.

With a runtime of 76 minutes, the movie’s narrative moves at an appropriate pace with none of the scenes in The Ladybug coming across as unnecessary. Directed by Ding Shi, the CG animation looks good. There are a lot of colors and fun character designs to enjoy.

The “Giving the Characters a Voice: At the Recording Studio with Lisa ‘Lisbug’ Schwartz, Jon Heder, Haylie Duff, and Norm MacDonald” featurette in the DVD release offers an interesting behind-the-scenes look.

I recommend you pick up a copy of The Ladybug if you want kids in your family to see a well-written animated movie.
