Lasso film review

A group of seniors and some young people trying to survive killer cowboys? Sign me up! I’m a fan of low-budget horror flicks, and Lasso (despite certain faults) made for an enjoyable viewing experience.

I was provided a free screener of Lasso for review. The opinions are my own.

From Dragonfly Films and directed by Evan Cecil, Lasso is a Western-themed slasher starring Sean Patrick Flanery (The Boondock Saints), Lindsey Morgan (The 100), Karen Grassle (Little House on the Prairie), and Andrew Jacobs (Paranormal Activity).

Here’s the synopsis:

From Dragonfly Films, and directed by Evan Cecil, ‘LASSO’ centers around Kit (Lindsey Morgan) and Simon (Andrew Jacobs), two young leaders of an Active Senior Tour group, out on an adventure to a small-town Rodeo festival located deep in the woods. It’s a great experience for the group … until they try to leave. Simon and Kit must save themselves, and whatever seniors they can, from becoming victims of a deadly Rodeo Ritual. Along the way they join up with another unexpected group of victims, including a one-armed cowboy, Ennis (Sean Patrick Flanery), Rosheen, the Rodeo queen, and Trish, a powerhouse female bull rider. Together the group must fight to survive the night from relentless bloodthirsty cowboys on the hunt for human livestock.

The problem with Lasso has to do with the level of stupidity certain characters show. But that is to be expected from a film where people are supposed to drop like flies. The plot itself, involving cowboys using horse hormones to become crazy powerful, is underdeveloped. I do think a lot could have been done with the premise if the characters were more fleshed out and the villains weren’t murderers just for the sake of it.

Having said all of that, Lasso is still fun. People die in different ways. Also, I liked the production value and direction. I do think with a bigger budget, this movie could have been amazing. The pace never falters and you will find yourself counting down the minutes to another death. There are a number of surprises I appreciated. Certain women shine when backed into a corner. The film also talks about animal rights in its own weird way, but without being preachy.

Lasso is currently available. I recommend you check it out. It is the kind of movie which will be more fun when watched with friends.

Considering was Lasso is supposed to be, I give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
