Comic-Con 2016: The Magic of Steven Universe

This year at San Diego Comic-Con, Tara and Angel were lucky enough to attend the Steven Universe Singalong and panel, which truly brought the magic of Steven Universe to the convention.

They took over The Geekiary’s twitter and livetweeted the event. Some of the highlights from the panel in general were:

  • Rebecca Sugar came out as bisexual. “There is this idea that these are themes that should not be shared with kids, but everyone shares stories of love and attraction with kids. So many stories for kids are about love and…it really makes a difference to hear stories about how someone like you can be loved and if you don’t hear those stories it will change who you are. It’s very important to me that we speak to kids about consent, we speak to kids about identity, that we speak to kids about…oh, there’s so much to say… I want to feel like I exist and I want everyone else who wants to feel that way to feel that way too.”
  • The crew hinted we’d know where all of Pearl’s swords came from very soon. Considering the blacksmith-like design on Uzo Aduba’s upcoming character, Bismuth… I think it’s safe to assume the fandom nailed that prediction!
  • Some of the unanswered questions (because of spoilers) were just as if not more telling than the answered ones. They dodged around a question about why Pearl would be nostalgic for Homeworld given her status as a pearl, avoided another about how the Diamonds came to power, and sidestepped one about Peridot developing new powers.
  • Rebecca and the crew like the shortness of the 11-minute episode formats because it forces them to be “dense.” She is however very excited about the upcoming half hour special, which will air Thursday, August 4th as a part of the Steven’s Summer Adventure event.
