Ms. Marvel #16 Review: Last Days – Part I

msmarvel-1

While Ms. Marvel does exist in the Marvel Universe, the series hasn’t necessarily been linked to major events in the past. That’s why seeing the series being tied to Secret Wars came as a surprise to me. The Marvel Universe has ended, and showing Kamala Khan’s last days on Earth felt like a very different take on the series’ humorous storytelling. However, G. Willow Wilson shone in this month’s issue and gave Kamala what she deserved.

We’ve stuck with Kamala Khan for more than a year, and it has been an amazing journey. She’s clearly a character that appmsmarvel-2eals to numerous readers and Wilson’s writing style took the experience to a whole new level.

Last Days – Part One opened with Kamala feeling down due to Kamran’s betrayal, but then everything become chaotic as the world started to come to an end. The whole issue was page upon page of fast-paced action. Adrian Alphona returned as the artist and while he added visual gags in almost every panel his style gave off a sense of dread as Kamala rushed to help anyone she could.

Our young super heroine had a lot of things to tackle in a single issue. She had to make sure her friends and family were safe, and she had to figure out what was happening. Seeing Karman kidnapping Kamala’s brother to see if he was an Inhuman too really took a toll on her. It’s hard enough to get over a crush; it’s even harder if the crush ended up being a villain.

One of the best things in the issue was a surprise appearance by none other than Carol Danvers herself. Kamala idolizes the hero and seeing the two finally meet made me so happy for her. I can’t wait for the two to team-up and try to protect the world.

Some readers might be sad to see Kamala Khan go because of Secret Wars, but seeing how famous the character has become since her debut it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a lot more of her once everything settles down in the Marvel Universe.
