Netflix Orders More Marvel With ‘The Punisher’ Spinoff Series

The Punisher

Just when you thought that Netflix’s Marvel TV connection couldn’t go any further, we now have news that they have officially picked up a Daredevil spinoff with The Punisher.

Netflix made the announcement earlier today (on Twitter with a really cool video) that they have picked up a standalone series featuring Frank Castle’s The Punisher and that Jon Bernthal will reprise the role that he starred in 2016’s Daredevil. Although it remains unclear at this time where exactly in the Marvel Universe timeline the series will take place, it was announced that Hannibal‘s Steve Lightfoot will be the executive producer and will write the first two episodes of the series.

Netflix has become known for their Marvel TV series, and they have been extremely popular series due to the gritty nature and dark tones of the series. The Punisher follows in the footsteps of other New York City-based Marvel superhero series including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, the forthcoming Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and the mini-series special, Marvel’s The Defenders.

Although it seems like we have had an overwhelming influx of Marvel news in conjunction with Netflix lately, can we hardly blame them for wanting to harness the popularity right now while there is still momentum? And for those of us who have seen season two of Daredevil, it is clear that Bernthal is a natural as the dark vigilante with the right mix of the need for vengeance and a sympathetic story. His performance is one of the best parts of the season, and the character’s complexity has made Frank Castle an intriguing part of the Hell’s Kitchen mythology.

You can read more about The Punisher character in our review of Daredevil season two. As Angel pointed out, Castle is an interesting and complex character, but his arc felt disjointed from the rest of the series. Hopefully this new spinoff series will give the character the time that his story, and fans, deserve.
