Oh, You’re Not Watching Archer Yet? You Should Be.

Summer is nearly here, and with it has come the usual lull in new episodes of our favorite TV shows – but that doesn’t mean that we should be at a loss, especially not in these days of TiVo/DVRs, Netflix streaming, and Amazon Prime. Lately I’ve been binging on several TV shows, including Arrow, Vikings, and Archer…and if you’re looking for a show with short but sweet episodes and plenty of laughs, the latter takes the cake in all categories.

Just why is Archer so appealing? The truth is that at first I didn’t know. In the beginning it seemed to be full of punchlines derived from personal jokes – not because I didn’t understand what they were going for (a spoof on spy dramas, but with a quite a few Arrested Development-style family problems thrown in for good measure) but because certain things were thrown in the viewers’ faces with little or no explanation.

However, after a half-dozen episodes I realized that in doing so, writer Adam Reed was basically just pulling fans head first into the Isis clan, all or nothing – and in my case, it worked. Though it took a bit of time to get used to this and the humor, the more I watched, the funnier it got. The thing is, there are a lot of different kinds of humor out there, but what’s great about Archer is that it pulls from so many of them that I think most people would be hard pressed to not find something to laugh about.

Of course, every show has its detractors – for example, some have expressed chagrin over Archer‘s animation, but personally I think that its pop comic style is refreshing. And speaking of refreshing, though there have also been complaints about the major changes made for Archer‘s fifth season, I think it was a much needed diversion from the same old, same old. I’ll refrain from mentioning exactly what those changes were (so as not to spoil it for those who haven’t watched), but the most important thing is that it’s the same characters I grew to love thrown into somehow even more ridiculous situations. I wouldn’t miss a single episode, if I were you!
