In the “upcoming Netflix shows I’m excited about” category, Siempre Bruja is close to the top. The series about an Afro-Latina time-traveling witch will debut on February 1, 2019.

While The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has given many fans an interesting take on magic, it has certain problems when it comes to representing women of color onscreen. Siempre Bruja might offer something of quality to an audience looking for well-written witches of color and tackling certain racial issues.

The upcoming show follows 19-year-old Carmen (Angely Gaviria). She is a 17-century Colombian slave and witch. Due to her being burned at the stake, she is able to travel to present day Cartagena with the help of a wizard. The trailer shows her trying to make sense of the modern world while trying to save a loved one. She also needs to stay away from witch-hunters in the present timeline.

The rest of the cast includes Valeria Emiliani, Sofia Araujo, Dylan Fuentes, Carlos Quintero, Duban Prado, and Lenard Vanderaa.

Do check out the trailer! Also, I’m not sure, but the guy talking to Carmen about what tourists do might be a queer character.

Vice President of International Netflix Originals Erik Barmack said, “Our second Colombian original Siempre Bruja is not only a magnetic young adult story that audiences will love but also holds a powerful message of empowerment that will connect deeply with members both in Colombia and globally.”

The show is based on the novel Yo, Bruja by Isidora Chacón. The first season will have 10 episodes. Also, in more interesting stuff, which Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is yet to offer, Siempre Bruja “will explore the deep history of the persecution of Black witches. In fact, the city of Cartagena was one of the seats of the Holy Office of the Spanish Inquisition, where men and women, namely African slaves, were tortured in the name of rooting out witchcraft.” (via Black Girl Nerds)

I hope this series does well with Netflix’s worldwide audience.
