Silk #5 Review: Black Cat

silk #5 cover

In issue #5, Cindy Moon continues to spend her free time trying to find any information on her missing family.  This is something she does during her down time at her day job with the Fact Channel.  She got caught, but it turned out okay as her boss offered to call in a favor with the NYPD. Mr. Jameson also told her that it’s okay to ask for help.  Cindy’s backstory is tragic; her own family was afraid of her because of that radioactive spider bite.

In her night job, being Silk, she runs into her ex-foe Pokémon dude/dragon guy. Black Cat kidnapped his daughter and sent him after Silk.  So Silk calls in whom she calls her sidekick, Spider-Man, for help.  Dragon guy’s daughter Marie is rescued, but things don’t go so well for Cindy!  Someone else – someone more sinister than Black Cat — was after Silk as well.

First, I just have to say while I’m normally fangirling writer Robbie Thompson to a ridiculous level, I must express how absolutely thrilled I am to see Stacey Lee back as the artist for this issue.  I was not a fan of the art in the last issue.  It wasn’t bad so much as I adore Lee’s style.  It really suits Thompson’s writing. Not to mention it’s beautiful and appealing to the eyes.  Please never go away again, Stacey!

And second, of course, Robbie Thompson’s writing continues to impress me.  It’s very relatable. And he pays great attention to detail. (Kudos on the Star Wars reference!) Everything in the first five issues ties together well.  There’s a cohesive story and characters that have played a prominent role in nearly every issue.  It does well to connect the reader in a deeper way, in my opinion.  Cindy Moon is written in a very real way. And considering the last page?  I’m very concerned about our heroine’s future!
