Star Wars Episode VIII “in the home stretch”

Star Wars Episode VIII

Can it be true? Is filming for Star Wars Episode VIII close to being wrapped up?

That is certainly the rumor churning up the mills this week, and personally I believe that it is purposefully being pushed to the forefront. After all, what better way to overshadow the tales that Rogue One requires massive reshoots and possibly even a new director than to let fans know that Star Wars Episode VIII is on schedule (perhaps even well ahead of it)?

This news was brought to light by Star Wars Episode VIII director Rian Johnson himself, who took to his Tumblr and posted a picture of Luke Skywalker’s Jedi robes on set, including the caption “in the home stretch”.

Of course this likely doesn’t mean much more than that principle photography is finished or almost finished – there is surely still a lot of work to be done (CGI, edits, etc.). But it’s nice to see the film’s director being so open about where they stand in creating Star Wars Episode VIII, especially as there’s yet to be any truly official statement about the problems that Rogue One is supposedly facing.

Episode VIII has only been shooting since February, with most of the filming happening in the U.K. and some on-location filming taking place in Croatia (which, between this and the fact that so much of Game of Thrones is filmed there, really bumps Croatia up on my “places to see as soon as possible” list). Not surprisingly, most of the real details are being kept completely under wraps, though comments made by some of the film’s lead actors have made it clear that fans should expect something very different from The Force Awakens. Oscar Isaac told the L.A. Times “It feels like we’re working on an independent film”, while John Boyega told Variety that Star Wars Episode VIII is “a different take, darker, bigger.”

(As a side note, I also loved that the interviewer from Variety referred to the relationship between Finn and Rey as a sort of budding romance, and Boyega immediately responded, “we didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way… Finn and Rey – they’re just friends.”)

Star Wars Episode VIII is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017, and I for one can’t wait!

  1. It’s cool that TPTB updates us about the filming, anyway I didn’t get it, why are all so hyped about the “more than bromance” between the 2 characters if 1 of the actor himself underlined that the MCs were just friend no romantic innuendo then…So I guess you was referring to a possible romance in Star Wars VIII?

It’d be cool but I’m under the impression they’re just pandering to the LGBT community to expand their fanbase (maybe putting a little something ambigous as a subtext), but without a true intention to add diversity to the table, however as usual time will tell.

    1. You could be right. I hope you’re not, though. I hope it’s not just pandering and we get some legit LGBTQ+ rep. We’ll have to see though.

    2. Honestly I guess for my part I legitimately didn’t even see a TINGE of romance between Finn and Rey. While there’s always the chance that they are pandering now, since StormPilot has become such a huge thing, I’m really hoping that’s not the case. And honestly while there may be some tiny hints to a romance in Episode VIII, I can’t see how it could be Finn and Rey, with what we know about where each of them are location- *and* plot-wise. But sigh…maybe I’m just being optimistic.
