Storm #5 Review: Death of Wolverine

This month’s issue of Storm turned out to be the best in the series yet! Even though the weather goddess was put in a difficult position by her friend Yukio, she still tried to set everything right in the end.

The first thing I want to talk about is the cover art. The amazing cover by Stephanie Hans was a perfect homage to Wolverine #1. Seeing Storm with lightning claws was very cool!

Victor Ibanez impressed me again with his art throughout the issue. He has a way of seamlessly conveying the different emotions Storm feels during the story and making her look ‘human’. I loved how she mourned Wolverine’s presence in the battleground, and then her determination to end the way the clans did things. Greg Pak kept the pace going in the story and I kept turning the pages to see what happened next.

Wolverine’s death was hard on Storm and rightfully so. Those two have been together for decades. In the previous issue the weather controlling mutant went to help her old friend Yukio and got dragged into a fight between four clans. The issue ended with Yukio declaring Storm as her champion and I was excited to see if Ororo would fight for her friend or not.

Being a fan of Storm I knew she would never hurt a soul unless it was her last option. So, seeing her facing a battle-to-the-death made me wonder what she would do in such a situation. Yukio was counting on her to win. She wanted her to fight like Logan would.

It was fun to read about how people saw Wolverine as a brutal and ruthless killer. On the other hand, Strom was one of the select few who knew about the gentle soul he possessed. The whole issue was about Storm trying to figure out the ‘real’ Wolverine and hoping she was right about him.

10300089_318915224958952_7785833547176471468_nHer fight with Gah-Ran in the Mojave Desert was a treat to see. I had been waiting for Storm to battle it out since the series started. Though Gah-Ran tried to put up a good fight, he was defeated in one move by Ororo. I wanted her to fight Kuva as well but that didn’t happen. As a Storm fanboy I really want her to face an opponent that makes her use all of her weather manipulating powers. I want her to let herself go and focus the wrath of Mother Nature at one enemy.

In the end, it all came down to two women, Storm and Yukio, doing what they thought Logan would’ve done. Their decisions were based on the person they knew and I can’t blame them for it. Was Wolverine really going to give control of all the clans over to Yukio? That’s something the story leaves to the readers to decide. If you are like me and think Storm was the one who knew Logan better than Yukio then what the female ninja did was wrong.

The story also made Storm realize that she can’t have everything her own way even if her goal is to bring peace.

Did you read Storm #5? Do you think Yukio made the right decision? Let us know!

  1. Great review. I agree with what is said here. As a enormous Storm fan-boy myself, it was thrilling to see Storm kick Gah-Ran. The part where she said “my turn” and then punched him with a TORNADO was an just brilliant. It was interesting to see Storm’s connection with Wolverine, constantly asking herself if she really knew him and asking what he would do in the situation – I liked that. The artwork from Ibanez was beautiful as usual. It’ll be interesting to see where the story takes us next. Whatever the case, I’m sure we’re in for one hell of a ride!

    1. The “my turn” part was awesome…i love how Greg is handling her…it’s not because she’s ‘weak’ that she didn’t defeat Gah-Ran in an instant, it’s because she always holds back in a fight 🙂

I can’t wait for the next issues and hope that the series keeps getting better and tell other comic book readers why Storm is an awesome character…she has incredible power but her emphatic nature always makes her look for another way other and not be offensive…fingers crossed she meets an opponent who really forces her to go all out!!!

  2. I loved everything about this issue. The art and the colors were sumptuous(lol! if the word can be used to describe art/color) The two story arc of the aftermath of the death of Wolverine was great. I love the were Pak is handling her in this but I still want him to push her more. The Oakland Clan, Kuva and Gah-Ran were great new characters to read about and which I wouldn’t mind reading again …… and since the issue ended with the air of things unfinished I feel we will get back to them. Yukio’s glee while being soaked with Kuva’s blood spatter was cool. How the hell could she kill Kuva of The Pointed Breast? Can Yukio walk?

    1. Agree with you. It did seem like Storm and Yukio will cross paths again. Damn! that scene where Yukio was so happy after killing Kuva…it was disturbingly awesome. Who knows how she was able to do that…an effective ninja assassin move? Or Yukio is faking her wheelchair injury and can walk (or atlast stand or something, etc)

  3. Hey Farid,
Thank you for providing such amazing reviews for Storm thus far, and for helping to support her solo book. I stumbled across your #SaveStorm post after learning through a friend that it may be cancelled(google searched). Being a huge Storm fan ever since the 90’s cartoon, it is good to see there are fans out there, doing whatever in their power to help support and spread the word. Greg Pak is an amazing writer and has the ability to write her in ways we havent seen before.

Keeping my fingers crossed that we get to see these stories, but from one Storm fan to another…THANK YOU for the support!

    Dre.

    1. That’s the best thing about this solo-series..Greg Pak is making me fall in love with Storm all over again..the way he writes her is just amazing…even though she’s in other X-Men books, her solo is where I feel I get to see the real her.

All the best for #SaveStorm because we all need the Weather Goddess to succeed 🙂
