Sundance Favorite “Summer Camp Island” Finds A Home On Cartoon Network

Summer Camp Island Cartoon NetworkCartoon Network just ordered a series based on Summer Camp Island, an animated short from Adventure Time‘s Julia Pott. The short is making the rounds at international film festivals and has won at Ottawa International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and American Film Institute Fest.

As a series, Summer Camp Island will tell the story of Oscar and his best friend Hedgehog, starting from when they’re dropped off for the first time at summer camp. Here’s the official description:

Away from their parents, the two friends must summon all their courage to navigate mysteries and wonders of this magical camp where camp counselors are witches, horses become unicorns, and monsters live under the bed. Not all camps offer the opportunity to swim with a talking shark in the swimming pool, crawl under the bed into a different universe, or make friends with the moon, but on Summer Camp Island, anything can happen.

Cartoon Network Studios will be producing this film, which makes me confident that the quality of the short will carry into the show. After all, Steven Universe is pretty close to perfect and I’ve loved Powerpuff Girls since the 90s version. If I had to pick anyone to make a Summer Camp Island series it would be CN. Since Julia Pott was one of the writers for Adventure Time I’m betting she feels the same way.

There isn’t much in the way of a release date yet other than “next year”. In the meantime, this preview from TIFF Trailers will give you a little taste of what to expect:

You can also try to track it down at one of the festivals where it’s showing. Julia Pott has a list of past and future events on her website if you’re curious.
