Supergirl Season 3 Blu-ray Review – There Be Deleted Scenes!

Supergirl-season-3-Blu-ray-dvd Supergirl season 3Supergirl season 3 started with a bit of a darker tone than we’re used to. After losing Mon-El in order to save Earth from the Daxamites, Kara is not her usual self. Things just go from bad to worse when they unearth an ancient ship…that’s actually from the future…and Mon-El is one of the passengers. Along with his wife. Binge watch season 3 on Blu-ray and Digital HD before season 4 premieres on its new day, Sunday, October 14 at 8pm.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

In Season Three, Kara Danvers grapples with the sacrifices she’s made personally while saving National City as Supergirl. She even considers covering up her human identity altogether. Being human and vulnerable is hard. Maybe she’s better off embracing her alien DNA and only being the “Girl of Steel”. As Kara struggles with her path forward, she continues to work with Hank Henshaw and her sister, Alex, at the Department of Extranormal Operations to battle all threats to National City, including new villains Morgan Edge, and the “Worldkiller”, known as Reign. Everything Kara’s ever known and everyone she’s ever loved will be tested in all 23 supercharged Supergirl adventures.

One of my main complaints about the Supergirl season 2 Blu-ray was the lack of deleted scenes and gag reel, which I believe should be standard to all TV season collections. Well, someone at Warner Bros. must have been paying attention, because Supergirl season 3 is packed full of bonus content (almost 100 minutes worth). Nearly every episode features at least one deleted scene, and disc three contains the coveted gag reel! Already this is worth the sticker price. I mean, you can watch the episodes on Netflix. If I’m going to purchase a TV season on Blu-ray, I want there to be something there that I’m not getting anywhere else.

Still no episode commentary from the actors, though. Maybe for season 4?

Disc two contains the entirety of last year’s mega-crossover, “Crisis on Earth-X”, that spanned all four DCTV shows – Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. I really enjoyed last year’s crossover, because we got to see some of our favorites acting completely different than how we’re used to. (Also Russell Tovey dating Leonard Snart!) This crossover was also exceptional because the stakes were real; not everyone made it back this time. Disc two also contains one of the set’s three featurettes, “Inside the Crossover: Crisis on Earth-X”, which is a very interesting look at how the story and the episodes all came together with interviews from the producers of all four shows.

The other two features are “She Will Reign!”, which is a look at the story of Samantha as she uncovers the truth about her identity, and “The Best of DC TV’s Comic-Con Panels San Diego 2017”, which is a highlight reel from the DCTV panel block at last year’s SDCC. I got to talk to Odette Annable (Reign) at SDCC in 2017, so it was pretty cool to go back and watch that interview after having seen the storyline play out, and then get to watch the featurette and see how everything was put together. Plus, the panels are always an experience, and I’m usually not able to see all of them, so I love getting to see the best parts of each one.

So, less featurettes than the season 2 set, but deleted scenes and a gag reel. I feel like that’s an even trade. (Plus three bonus episodes, considering you get the entire crossover.) The Supergirl season 3 set gives you a lot of bang for your buck!

I fell a little (okay a lot) behind with episode reviews for Supergirl season 3, but no matter! With the Blu-ray, you can watch them all in glorious HD. (Presumably you all have bigger televisions than I do.) The 4-disc set features DTS-HD Master Audio in English 5.1 with subtitles in English SDH, French, and Latin Spanish. The video is in 1080 HD 16×9 1.78.1 quality. The Blu-ray set also comes with a redeem code for a digital copy, so you can take Supergirl and her friends with you anywhere.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, Katie McGrath, and Odette Annable, with Chris Wood, and David Harewood. The show is based on the characters from DC by special arrangement with the Jerry Siegel family. It is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller.

Supergirl season 3 is now available to own on Blu-ray (+Digital) and DVD. The Blu-ray retails for $49.99; the DVD for $44.98. Season 4 premieres October 14 at 8pm on The CW.

Are you a fan of Supergirl? Will you be buying Supergirl season 3 on Blu-ray or DVD? Are you excited for season 4? (You should be! A trans superhero, played by a trans actress! The return of Superman and the debut of Lois Lane!)
