The Legend of Korra 3×10 Review: Long Live the Queen

With only two more episodes of The Legend of Korra: Book 3 left, this week’s episode made the perfect setup for the finale. Zaheer and the rest of the Red Lotus have made their move and are ready for Korra. They also have Mako and Bolin as their hostages.

With the Red Lotus present in the Earth Kingdom it was only a matter of time they would take out the Queen. It’s not as if I felt compassion for the Queen. She has been one of the characters I’ve hated throughout the season. But seeing the way she died on a kid’s show was something I wasn’t expecting. With the walls of the city down, the whole city went into chaos. The whole thing reminded me of the French Revolution where the poor took down the elite.

The best part of the episode was Asami. Even though she’s not a bender, she is very smart, and quite capable of holding her own in dangerous situations. After being captured by the Earth Queen’s troops in the previous episode, she immediately thought of an escape plan. I loved how she broke free from the prison cell, and then found a way to unlock Korra from her restraints. The two girls worked together to take control of the airship that was taking them to Ba Sing Se.

Even when things didn’t go as planned, and the airship crashed in the dessert, it was Asami’s smarts that helped the crew escape. 1546303_281516485365493_8763747169847467197_nNot only did she fix the airship, she also constructed a sled when it was destroyed by a huge dessert beast. The writers need to keep writing Asami as the independent smart young woman she is. I just hope they don’t move her to the background to keep her safe during the finale like they did in Book 2.

Bolin and Mako didn’t add anything to the plot this week. However, the scene where Bolin tried to metalbend out of the prison cell seemed to foreshadow that he’ll be able to lavabend like Ghazan. It would be cool if Bolin achieves such a power.

This was clearly a setup episode and I can’t wait for the two part finale that’s going to air in two weeks. Team Korra are down two members because the Red Lotus has Mako and Bolin. However, Lin, Lord Zuko, and Tonraq have joined her team. I hope Eska and Desna also show up and aid Team Korra because I want the twins to have a rematch with Ming-Hua.

With chaos reigning in Ba Sing Se, it wouldn’t be a surprised if Tenzin provided some backup with his team of new airbenders. There’s also a very high chance that the newly liberated residents of Ba Sing Se will join Zaheer and go against the Avatar.

The Legend of Korra Book 3: Change has to be one of the best books in the series. It has shown clear character growth, and tackles more mature themes.

Best Bending Award: The award clearly goes to Zaheer. The move he performed on the Earth Queen to suffocate her to death was amazing and kind of reminded me of what Storm from the X-Men is able to do. The whole scene was one of the darkest in the series.
