Then Came You Trailer Promises Laughs and Tears

Then Came You trailer

So, one thing I learned from the Then Came You trailer is that the movie is now called Then Came You. When casting news first broke, it was called Departures.

Asa Butterfield and Maisie Williams star in a film that will surely leave me a sobbing heap on the floor, because this has the potential to be a serious tear-jerker and I notoriously cry at everything. Williams plays Skye, a young girl with a terminal illness who enlists Calvin (Butterfield) with her “To Die List”, her “not as lame” version of a bucket list. The Then Came You trailer shows the two in a variety of odd situations – wearing food costumes, sliding down the pole at a firehouse, playing dice on the street – and hints at a romance between the two, even as it shows him pursuing flight attendant Izzy (Nina Dobrev).

You can view the full trailer at ET Online. I haven’t been able to find a YouTube link, but Tyler Hoechlin, who also stars in the film, posted a short snippet on his Instagram earlier today.

Unfortunately, the trailer also seems to show signs of something that had me worried when I first heard about the project. Based on the description and based on what little we see here in this trailer, Skye may very well be a “manic pixie dream girl” whose quirkiness inspires the hypochondriac Calvin to live his best life, and I’m really tired of those kind of stories. It’s too early to judge, obviously, and I intend to see the film regardless, just based on the stellar cast (aside from Butterfield, Williams, Hoechlin, and Dobrev, Ken Jeong and Tituss Burgess are also in this movie). Even movies that sought to subvert the trope oftentimes end up unintentionally perpetuating it – for example, Paper Towns, the movie that seemed to miss the point of the book.

It certainly does help that Hoechlin’s Frank reminds Calvin that it’s about Skye and not him; perhaps I can remain cautiously optimistic that Then Came You doesn’t fall into the trap that so many movies do, and that Skye’s journey is her own and not simply a means of jump-starting Calvin’s.

Then Came You from Voltage Pictures and Shout! Studios, will be released in theaters and On Demand February 1, 2019.

    1. Not sure about On Demand, but so far the only international release looks like the Netherlands in April.
