“What Is Dark?” The Cast and Crew of Titans Talk Season 1 at NYCC 2018

Titans at NYCC 2018

DC brought some heavy hitters to this year’s New York Comic Con by premiering the first two episodes of Titans, a grown-up, live action Teen Titans anchoring the comics giant’s new streaming service. I got the chance to talk to the cast of Titans at NYCC 2018 about what we can expect in the show’s first season.

Before we met the cast of Titans at NYCC 2018, there was some skepticism about the show. DC has a habit of making dark, gritty reboots that take themselves too seriously. Man of Steel and Batman v Superman did well at the box office but were universally panned. When the trailer for Titans debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, fans worried that this show would just be another DC live action property that failed to live up to expectations. But when the episodes premiered at NYCC – at a special panel the night before the convention started, accessible only by winning a lottery for seats – fans seemed excited by what they saw.

I think some fans were confused by the attitude of Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) in the trailer, but Thwaites talked about how he views Dick and Bruce Wayne’s relationship as father/son but ultimately lacking in something important, that Dick eventually grew to resent Bruce for turning him into a weapon. He is starting to struggle with the path he’s on, uncomfortable with the amount of violence in his life and how comfortable he’s become with it. Alan Ritchson (who plays Hawk) talked about how it’s a very human look at superheroes, especially for Hawk, who is a superhero without any super powers. He emphasized that it’s not so much “dark” (which he insists is a meaningless word) as it is a very brutal look at the human condition and deals with subjects that other shows shy away from.

But there will be moments of levity, of course, in the form of perpetual comic relief Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), who is introduced in the series by hitting on Raven (Teagan Croft) using Twilight Zone references.
