Tomb Raider Revival Finds Its Lara Croft

Rumors about Tomb Raider casting have been flying for the past month now. Late Thursday, it was confirmed that Swedish actress Alicia Vikander has been cast as Lara Croft. Vikander is best known for her roles in Ex Machina and The Danish Girl.

The rumored hopefuls and front runners for Lara Croft included Daisy Ridley of The Force Awakens fame, Emilia Clarke, Cara Delevigne, Vikander, and Saoirse Ronan.  Ridley, who confirmed in March that she was in talks to for the Tomb Raider reboot, seems to have her hands full with the Star Wars franchise. To be honest, I’d rather keep her as my Rey. John Boyega, another Star Wars favorite, first suggested the role to Daisy after playing the game.

New life was breathed into the franchise after the 2013 Tomb Raider video game release and subsequent 2015 sequel. Since then, the franchise has been gathering steam, but the film has been following a silent but steady path. In 2009, a third film was confirmed and in 2015, Warner Bros and MGM studios began pre-production. Alicia’s casting is the first bright spot of news in what promises to be an exciting revival.

Angelina Jolie is considered the original Lara Croft and played the titular character in both the 2001 and 2003 films. Her portrayal of Croft earned her the title of sex symbol and bad-ass bombshell, but the actress has since branched into producing and directing.  The new film is said to follow a younger Lara throughout her earlier adventures and will be a prequel to the Jolie films.

So far, the project is in pre-production, and Roar Uthaug will direct and there is no plot set or script. Other than Croft, none of the other characters have been cast. However, we at The Geekiary would love to see some of your dream casts! Let us know in the comment section below who you’re looking forward to seeing in the reboot!
