“Unlikely Heroes” Using Proceeds From Captain America Print to Fight Hate

The artist behind this viral Captain America drawing has pledged to donate profits from a special print run to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Zachary Dolan created this striking piece of art in response to violent rhetoric and attacks following the American election earlier this month. The Southern Poverty Law Center has logged more than 700 reports of hate-based harassment or assault, largely of Muslim women, since the day after the election. “Originally it was just me doing it on my own initiative [because] I knew some people who had been victimized like this, and it was a way to work out some feelings,” Dolan told The Geekiary. Now his powerful image is the heart of Unlikely Heroes’ fundraising drive for the SPLC.

Dolan, who draws the SUPER! comic published by Unlikely Heroes, posted the original drawing on the SUPER! Comic Facebook page November 17th with a passionate message about standing up to hate, even when it isn’t directed at you. I highly recommend you go read it. The drawing appeared on his personal page the next day with the simple caption “No further. Not today.” A flood of likes and shares followed. Fans began asking where they could buy a print. Dolan and the rest of the Unlikely Heroes team decided to put out prints in both the original pencils or color (done by the Everardo Orozco and Laurie Foster). Here’s the two versions together:

100% of the net profits from the print will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Explaining their choice of charity, Unlikely Heroes said:

We feel as though this charity best represents the message conveyed by the Captain. The Southern Poverty Law Center is ANTI-HATE. It is also an extremely transparent charity and we felt they would do the most work with your money.

According to SPLC’s website, they have a group of donors who have promised to match any donations raised at the end of the year, so this donation will effectively be doubled.

Unlikely Heroes is asking $40 for this print with free shipping included within the continental United States. (If you’re outside the US, they can offer shipping quotes at the same email you use for ordering.) It is 11″ x 17″, and both versions will have the caption “No Further. Not Today.” at the bottom of the image.

If you want to order one of your own, send an email to “hero@super-comic.com” with the word PRINTS in the subject line. Include your name and full shipping address in the email body along with how many prints you want. Don’t forget to specify black and white or color. This puts you on the pre-order list. When they close orders on the 28th, they’ll send out Paypal invoices (you can pay by credit card, too). You get a tracking number when your print ships. Expect 2-3 weeks for the print to show up- the studio is printing after payment is received so there is a small lag.
