Steven Universe Podcast Volume 2 is Crystal Gem Fantastic

steven universe podcast volume 2Have you been listening to Steven Universe Podcast Volume 2 though? Have you remembered how cool it is to get behind-the-scenes insight into your favorite episodes and characters? Do you appreciate voice actors improvising their roles for our hiatus-starved selves? No?? You should be listening to the Steven Universe Podcast though.

Seriously. It was good when it started, but the podcast has really blossomed in format and content. McKenzie Atwood has grown a lot as a host, and each Volume 2 episode has a fantastic rotation of guests that should keep any diehard SU fan invested and interested and content. Currently each episode features in depth discussion of a character, on their development from ideas and sketches to fully realized cartoon personality.

Rebecca Sugar offers breathtaking wisdom on the series she has so lovingly created as casually as she giggles about the fabulously silly ideas that led to some of her favorite moments. Former executive producer Ian Jones-Quartey speaks alongside her, and as a bonus he sometimes offers insight into his new show, OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, also on Cartoon Network. At least the voice actor of the currently featured character has been present in each Volume 2 offering, and sometimes pairs of them as well – DeeDee Magno-Hall and Michaela Dietz feature on both the Pearl and Amethyst episodes, for example.

And remember I mentioned the VAs improvising in character? Yeah. It’s fantastic.

If the longer character studies of Volume 2 don’t suit your attention span or time constraints, there are “Steven Selects,” 20-30 minute recaps of all-time fan favorite episodes. Shorter still are the “MiniRecaps,” 6-7 minute offerings of the most recent Steven Universe episodes. Hopefully when we get more Steven in April, we will get more MiniRecaps as well.

It’s quite apparent that each person interviewed on the Steven Universe Podcast loves and believes in the show they all make together. The feeling that Steven Universe itself gives you, the idea that people can be different but still figure out how to love each other anyway, is palpable whenever I listen. It’s not magic, it’s just friendship.

You can find Steven Universe Podcast Volume 2 on iTunes and everywhere else you get your podcasts. New episodes drop every Thursday.
