Head’s up, Stargate fans: we have a box of Stargate: Atlantis goodies from Comet TV to give away!

I was reluctant to start watching Stargate: Atlantis back when it first aired. I really loved Stargate: SG-1 (warts and all). When I say I loved it, I mean I brought a picture of Captain Carter to the salon when I was eighteen and had them cut three feet of hair off so I could look like my hero. I was invested. My fear was that a new series could ruin Stargate for me if it was terrible. Then a friend of mine watched the first season and told me I 100% had to watch it. “You’ll feel guilty about it, but you’re going to like it better than SG-1,” were his exact words.

Turns out, he was right.

The Stargate shows have been justly criticized for having a few standout characters but an overall lack of representation, but for me SGA got the most right. There was a female leader who was strong without having to be a physical beast (Weir), a beautifully nuanced woman who didn’t have to choose between family and her place on an exploratory team (Teyla), a stay-at-home dad who didn’t get any flack for it (Kanaan), and a pre-Aquaman Jason Momoa. The main team had more than one POC. There were issues, especially after Weir left, but the show was consistently enjoyable. It’s one of my go-to programs to marathon when I’m sick.

If you don’t have the DVDs, though, it’s hard to find somewhere to watch Stargate: Atlantis online for free. Hulu Plus has it for a charge, but there is a free option: COMET.

COMET is an actual TV station that launched last fall which can also be streamed free online. Most of the programming is science fiction and horror with some fantasy and other related genres. This month they’re featuring Stargate: Atlantis along with Wolfen and Flash Gordon among other shows. The titles mostly come from MGM and United Artists. There’s no sign-up, registration, or subscription required. Better yet, you can watch it internationally.

Sound awesome? It is, but here’s the catch: like a traditional TV station, it’s not on-demand. Basically, this is a good channel to leave on while you sulk through a cold on the couch when your Netflix queue is empty. You can find a schedule of their programming here on their website (for example, Stargate: Atlantis is on Monday through Friday at 10/9 Central). There’s also this handy widget you can scroll through to check out their December highlights:

So on to the important part here: free stuff! COMET is giving us a box especially for our readers- one of you will win this. Here’s what they say is inside:
