YouTube’s Origin Challenges Viewers to Leave Earth at SDCC

YouTube Origin

New series from streaming services is nothing new, but YouTube is entering the arena, and their newest series, Origin, made its debut at San Diego Comic-Con. With a diverse cast (and some well-known heavy hitters), proven producers, and a platform that most have access to, Origin seems to be the series that YouTube is extremely proud of – and deservedly so.

The premise is terrifying: a group of passengers on a spaceship from Earth to colonize a new a planet wake up early and must survive and learn what happened to them. Think Passengers, but with a twist: the rest of the passengers and crew have already left the spaceship. Space in this series looks relentless, and since those on board appear to be leaving their pasts behind, this will no doubt create some tension on board, especially since one of them is not who they seem to be.

Origin was created and written by Mika Watkins, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and produced by the team from The Crown and Outlander. The cast and crew shot the massive production over five months in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I was able to attend the press room for Origin at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, and spoke to several members of the cast including Natalia Tena and Tom Felton. You can view those videos below.

In addition, YouTube dropped the first trailer during the convention as well, and it seems pretty edgy. There definitely seem to be elements of the horror genre as well as the sci-fi aspect. You can view the trailer below.

YouTube’s subscription service, YouTube Premium, will launch the original series in Fall 2018.
