What to Look Forward to in 2020

2020 pop culture

2019 was a dumpster fire of a year that had some great moments in popular culture. With that in mind, let’s take a look ahead at what we’re excited about for 2020.

Movies

Wonder Woman 1984

Totally radical, to the max. The first Wonder Woman was one of my favorite movies of 2017, and even though there were a few setbacks on the road to the sequel, after the trailer was released, the hype train went from 0 to 60, like, instantaneously. Wonder Woman 1984 looks so deliciously ’80s while still managing to keep the charm and fire of the first movie, and this film is definitely one of my must-sees of the year.

Black Widow

I’m not going to lie, my excitement for this film has dimmed somewhat over the years, thanks to star Scarlett Johansson’s repeated tone-deaf comments, Natasha’s death in Endgame, and the fact that this movie is about six years overdue, but it feels like a hard-won victory that this film was even made. And for me, Marvel has yet to put out a film that’s not entertaining, at least, plus the cast list is crazy talented.

The Dylan O’Brien Resurgence

We’re big fans of Dylan O’Brien here at The Geekiary and have missed seeing him in theaters. He has three films slated to premiere in 2020 – Monster Problems, The Education of Fredrick Fitzell, and Infinite – and I could not be more excited.

Television

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek is our happy place – a show with realistically written queer leads and a main queer couple who are all kinds of relationship goals. Season 6 is the final season, and I can’t wait to see David and Patrick get married. It’s sad that such a great, smart show will be ending this year, but I always prefer when shows go out on their own terms, while they’re still good, rather than continuing on ad nauseum long after the magic is gone.

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” conclusion

DCTV’s most ambitious crossover concludes after a frustrating one-month break with Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. This event is over a year in the making, and we’re anxious to see how our intrepid heroes can restore the multiverse – and maybe save Oliver Queen.

Shadow and Bone

One of my favorite book series is almost a Netflix series! Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grisha trilogy has been combined with her Dregs duology to become this highly-anticipated fantasy series due to release at some point this year.

Superman & Lois

Yeah, is it any surprise that I’m excited about this upcoming Supergirl spinoff centered around the Man of Steel and his wife learning how to balance being parents with saving the world? Y’all know how much I love SuperHoech.

Books

The Glass Hotel

I’m really looking forward to diving into this upcoming mystery from Emily St. John Mandel, who wrote one of my favorite books, Station Eleven.

The Enigma Game

I am likewise very excited about this new novel from best-selling author Elizabeth Wein, who wrote Code Name Verity and The Pearl Thief.

Anime

Haikyuu

Everyone’s favorite volleyball anime finally returns for season 4 next Friday and I, for one, am bouncing off the walls in anticipation. I have missed seeing these volleyball idiots in action, and the current direction of the manga has me a little nostalgic for the way things used to be.

Fruits Basket

As I mentioned in my top 5 anime of 2019 post, I’m still a little bit of a newbie when it comes to anime, so I wasn’t around for the original 2001 adaptation of Fruits Basket. That said, I do know that the original version was only one season, because the manga was still being written at the time. The 2019 adaptation will encompass the entire manga, so when season 2 premieres later this year, everyone will be seeing things animated for the first time. Now that Tohru knows Kyo’s secret, things are about to get good, and I am so totally here for it.

Given movie

Another one of my top anime of 2019, Given played its way into our hearts, and we all became just a little obsessed with it. Season 2 is unlikely, as there isn’t enough of the source material for a full season, but a movie centering on Haruki and Akihiko has been greenlit and is slated to come out at some point this year (at least in Japan). We can’t wait!

Attack on Titan

The final season of Attack on Titan will be released this year, and I am on the edge of my seat waiting to find out where the story goes from here! I’ve heroically managed to stave off reading the manga in order to go into the anime as unspoiled as possible (I’ve accidentally spoiled myself several times just trying to Google spellings), and October cannot get here fast enough.

Violet Evergarden movie

Still reeling from the tragic arson of the Kyoto Animation studio, the upcoming Violet Evergarden movie is still highly-anticipated in the community, ranking in the top 10 for upcoming premieres. It’s slated to drop in April.

Free! movie

I’m unsure of the status of this film after the KyoAni fire, but it’s meant to coincide with the 2020 Olympics, as Haru and Rin were attempting to make the national team when season 3 ended. Free! is one of my favorite anime, and I am always excited for more content.

Games

Final Fantasy VII Remake

I’m not now nor have I ever been much of a gamer, but I know there’s a lot of online chatter about the upcoming FFVII remake, which comes out this April. When the trailer dropped at E3 last year, it made me want to rush out and buy an Xbox or a Playstation so that I could join in on the fun, because the graphics look amazing, and our favorite sourwolf is voicing the main villain in a mini-Teen Wolf reunion.

Granblue Fantasy Versus

A fighting game for consoles based on the popular Japanese mobile game Granblue Fantasy (which has also inspired an anime that I love) is due to be released in Japan in early 2020, and in North America at a later date (hopefully also in 2020). I attended the Granblue Fantasy fan panel at NYCC this year and everyone is really excited for this to finally come out!

Comics

Check, Please!

The little webcomic that could is coming to an end in 2020. Creator Ngozi tweeted just today that there are only about 7 or 8 chapters left of the marvelous webcomic about a former figure skater who joins his college hockey team and ends up dating the captain. The second volume, Sticks and Scones, publishes in April.

——-

That just about does it for my list! What are you all excited for in 2020?

    1. I FORGOT THAT ONE, TOO. I started coming up with this list last night in bed, and when I went to type it up this morning I forgot, like, a bunch of stuff.
