Fan Artist Friday: 221Broderie

221broderie

I love finding art to hang on the walls–they just look better with something on them. Aside from the traditional paintings, I was excited to find a unique approach to fandom–embroidery–when I discovered artist Laureen of 221Broderie.

Indeed Laureen has found an amazing way to express herself and the things she loves with “good old” needle and thread. Read on to learn about her stitch artistry.

What mediums do you work in?

I trained to learn Lunéville embroidery, a technique for working with beads and sequins. I also like to use more unusual materials, like tiny bush leaves, tree bark, or some sequins that I made with paper. Usually I work with conventional materials that comes to mind, like cotton yarns.221broderie-3

What fandoms do you create art for?

I am always inspired by what I like and so inevitably I started by creating embroideries on the theme of my favorite shows, movies or books that I love! And then the day I learned of the death of Leonard Nimoy, I immediately wanted to do something in memory, so I created my first minimalist silhouette to his cult character, Mr. Spock. I liked it so much that I continued with all the other characters that I love!

What’s been the most exciting moment of your fan artist career?

I’m not sure that I can really answer that question. I [wish I had the courage to send] some of my creations to actors of my favorite shows like Benedict Cumberbatch or David Tennant. Otherwise I am always very happy when a friend comes to me with an idea, or when a customer finds one of his favorite characters in my shop. It’s enough for me!

What project are you currently working on?

Right now I am doing some tests because I want to create in the coming weeks several embroideries that I could stick on any exterior frontage, as a kind of treasure hunt/street art.

What’s your favorite piece of art that you’ve ever created?

It’s always difficult to choose just one! Every piece had this little “je ne sais quoi” even when I redo a model several times. But I must admit having a greater commitment to the pieces that were long to realize. For example I embroidered for a friend a reproduction of the door of Moria with a blue phosphorescent thread– it measures nearly a meter high by 60 cm wide and it took me about 40 hours to finish. Of course for me the best part was when I finally offered to him!
