34th GLAAD Media Awards Nominate Chucky, Heartstopper, P-Valley & More!

The nominations for the 34th GLAAD Media Awards. This year’s nominations include Chucky, Heartstopper, P-Valley, and more!

The 34th GLAAD Media Awards, that considered queer content published, released, or broadcast between January 1 – December 31, 2022, have revealed the full list of nominations. The award ceremony will take place in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton come Thursday, March 30, 2023, as well as in New York City at the Hilton Midtown on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

“With violence, harmful legislation, false rhetoric and other attacks on the LGBTQ community continuing to escalate, it’s more crucial than ever that our community remains visible and included in the stories that the world sees in film, television, music, journalism, and other forms of media,” shared GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “This year we have more nominees than ever before to represent immensely impactful projects that entertain, educate, and grow acceptance of LGBTQ people. From new stories that debunk lies about transgender youth to kids and family programming which allows all families to be represented, this year’s nominated media images are beloved by audiences and are creating real change.”

This year we have a total of 295 nominees across 33 categories. Two new categories were added to the 34th GLAAD Media Awards; Outstanding Podcast and Outstanding Live TV Journalism. 

Also, for the first time ever, the Outstanding Reality Program category was split to nominate reality competition and non-competition series individually. The Outstanding Kids & Family Programming category was also split to nominate live-action and animated content. Furthermore, this is the first time the Outstanding Film – Wide Release category features 10 nominees!

While you can read the full list of nominees here, I will be going over a bunch of categories. And yes, I will also be sharing some of my opinions.

Outstanding Film – Wide Release

  • A Man Called Otto (Sony Pictures) – I had no idea this film, starring Tom Hanks, had queer representation. I might need to watch it.
  • Bodies Bodies Bodies (A24) – This is a fun movie!
  • Bros (Universal Pictures) – I can understand why it got nominated, but I wasn’t really into it. However, you can read Angel’s review here.
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once (A24) – It better win the Best Picture Oscar and the Best Lead Actress Oscar this year!
  • Lightyear (Pixar) – That one little kiss between two female characters really got a bunch of people mad.
  • Nope (Universal Pictures) – An awesome movie overall.
  • Scream (Paramount Pictures)
  • Spoiler Alert (Focus Features) – This movie was way too emotional, even for me!
  • Strange World (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures) – In my opinion, it was trying to do way too much.
  • Tár (Focus Features) – I still haven’t watched it. Hmmm.

Outstanding Film – Streaming or TV

  • Anything’s Possible (Prime Video)
  • B-Boy Blues (BET+)
  • A Christmas to Treasure (Lifetime) – A fun ensemble film about a bunch of childhood friends, two of them being queer men, getting together for a treasure hunt.
  • Crush (Hulu) – The alleged drama surrounding the leads. Ha!
  • Do Revenge (Netflix)
  • The Fallout (HBO Max)
  • Fire Island (Hulu) – So good! Go watch it!
  • The Holiday Sitter (Hallmark) – You can read my review here!
  • Three Months (Paramount+) – It was okay.
  • Wildhood (Hulu) – A good one!

Outstanding Film – Limited Release

  • Anaïs in Love (Magnolia Pictures)
  • Benediction (Roadside Attractions)
  • Death and Bowling (Wolfe Releasing)
  • Firebird (Roadside Attractions) – You can read my review here. I didn’t care for it much.
  • Girl Picture (Strand Releasing)
  • The Inspection (A24)
  • My Policeman (Prime Video) – Starring Harry Styles. A complete mess! And not the fun kind! I couldn’t even get myself to write a review.
  • Neptune Frost (Kino Lorber)
  • The Swimmer (Strand Releasing)
  • Wendell & Wild (Netflix) – Yes! Go watch it!

Outstanding Comedy Series

  • Abbott Elementary (ABC) – All the awards!!!
  • Derry Girls (Netflix)

  • Harley Quinn (HBO Max)
  • Love, Victor (Hulu) – I’m glad it’s finally over. I just couldn’t get myself to watch the third and final season.
  • Never Have I Ever (Netflix)
  • Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)
  • Sex Lives of College Girls (HBO Max)
  • Sort Of (HBO Max)
  • What We Do in the Shadows (FX)

Outstanding Drama Series

  • A League of Their Own (Prime Video) – The fandom deserves another season!
  • Heartbreak High (Netflix)
  • High School (Amazon Freevee)
  • Interview with the Vampire (AMC) – YAAAASSSSS!!! You can read my coverage here.
  • Our Flag Means Death (HBO Max) – Like, duh! Go watch it!
  • Queer as Folk (Peacock) – As someone who grew up watching the 2000 version, the promos for this reboot just didn’t do it for me. And yes, it got canceled after just one season.

Wait! Did I read the nominees in the final category correctly? Did Elite season 6 not get nominated? Muahahahahaha!

Unfortunately, Elite has devolved from the type of trash that was messy and fun to trash that needs to be thrown out ASAP!

Also, for some reason, there’s an Indian version of Elite, called Class, being released on Netflix on February 3, 2023. Sigh!

You can tell from the trailer that Class won’t be well-written. But hey, I guess I will at least watch the first season because I don’t love myself enough yet.
