Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3×5 Review: 4,722 Hours

This episode was so good I don’t even know how to review it. I loved it okay. I loved it a lot. And not just because I have been waiting to find out what happened to Simmons on that alien planet since the season started. And it was almost as good as I could have imagined. I mean sure it was a little cliche and very derivative of the gritty Sci-Fi style of the moment. But it was exciting and it actually dealt with the psychological effects of isolation surprisingly well. Just all around a really good episode.

This week on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. we finally get to find out what happened to Simmons during the 4,722 hours she was stranded on an alien planet and why she’s so desperate to get back there. The premise that Simmons is finally tell Fitz how she found herself stranded on a baron planet without any sunlight. We already knew that though, the shocking (or not that shocking really but it’s supposed to be shocking) part is that she wasn’t alone. There was a mysterious dangerous monster that drove people crazy, and a super hot astronaut who’s been stuck there since 2001.

Okay so first things first, I don’t ship FitzSimmons. I know that I’m not supposed to let my shipping preferences affect the way I review a show but that’s just not going to happen. The Geekiary is all about sharing FEELINGS and I have a lot of FEELINGS about ships. My feelings about the FitzSimmons ship is that it should be strictly platonic but I am aware that there are a lot of people that disagree with me on that, including some of the people that make Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But the great thing about “4,722 Hours” is that it can be read as both platonic and romantic.

I’ll admit that I found the blue wash a little overdone and the romance plot was a little heavy handed but that obviousness worked in the situation because of course they would latch on to the onto the one person they have left. Really though, the love story was the relationship between Fitz and Simmons. I don’t see it as romantic but there’s no denying it’s strength. It was thoughts of Fitz that kept Simmons going. She knew he wouldn’t give up on her and he didn’t.
