Amazon Developing Anti-Fridging Female Superhero Series!

The Refrigerator Monologues Deadtown Amazon

Amazon is bringing us a very interesting live-action adaptation. Shauna Cross has been brought onboard to write Deadtown, bringing the novella The Refrigerator Monologues to the streaming service.

As the name implies, The Refrigerator Monologues (a novella by Catherynne M. Valente) focuses on five women who die after crossing paths with male superheroes.

The fridging trope is real and no one on this website likes it. For those who don’t know, fridging is when a female character is killed as a plot device to further a hero’s journey and manpain. It is one of the reasons I didn’t like X-Men: Apocalypse.

Some might argue certain male characters can be fridged as a well, but that’s a different discussion.

For me, it is even worse than the Women as a Sexy Lamp trope. At least, those female characters don’t die. Ha!

In the upcoming show, five women meet each other in purgatory named Deadtown and they decide to reclaim control of their stories and happen to discover the powers they have. Sound awesome, right?

Tara, one of our editors and content writers, has already reviewed Valente’s story.

Shauna Cross (Whip It, Bad Santa 2) is adapting the novella for Amazon. The upcoming show will be the streaming service’s first superhero series focusing on women. The rest of the superhero content on Amazon includes The Tick with The Boys and Invincible also in the works.

Cross will executive produce the show with Valente, Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard, and Cliff Roberts. Cross is repped by WME and Syndicate. Rain Management reps Valente while Literary Agency represents Howard Morhaim.

Feel free to share your thoughts about Deadtown. Have you read The Refrigerator Monologues? What did you think of it? Do let us know.
