Animal Kingdom 4×2 Review: Angela

animal kingdom season 4 episode 2 Angela review deran adrian

The fight for power between Smurf and Joshua intensified as a woman from the Cody family’s past appeared in ‘Angela.’ While I’m ready to see the stakes continue to get higher, you know I’m hoping nothing too bad happens to Adrian and Deran’s relationship.

I was provided a free review screener of ‘Angela.’ The opinions are my own.

I have to begin by talking about Smurf and Joshua. The scenes these two characters share are some of the most intense in the entire series. Smurf can’t let Joshua know for sure she has figured out he killed Morgan. It’s awesome to see the tension between the two whenever they’re alone in a room.

I liked how Janine decided to teach her grandson a lesson by sending a detective to scare him. However, Joshua has changed. In my opinion, he seems to be transforming into someone who lacks empathy. It is clear he is just patiently waiting for the right time to take Smurf down. He wants to destroy everything she has built.

Joshua might think he is doing it all as revenge for what Janine did to his mother, but I suspect his primary motivation is greed. He grew up with nothing, and now he wants to take all of the power he can from the family that abandoned him.

As I’ve mentioned before, Joshua and Smurf are playing a dangerous game of ‘cat-and-mouse.’ At this point, I’m not sure who is going to win. Unless Smurf isn’t revealed to be suffering from a serious medical condition, Joshua is set to take everything.

‘Angela’ also included Janine-centric flashbacks. I don’t know about you, but I’m enjoying learning more about Smurf. She has always been on the lookout for routes to become more powerful. Deciding to break up with Jake and be with Colin made sense because of who she is as a character. Young Smurf could tell Colin had more power in the group and she wanted to cement her position.

As for why the episode is called ‘Angela,’ it’s due to a new character being introduced. Angela was Julia’s friend. She shares a lot of history with the Cody family and it was apparent from the beginning that Smurf didn’t want anything to do with her.

I don’t trust Angela at all. She seems to be playing some kind of game. I wonder what Joshua will say to Angela because he knows her from his childhood.

Now, coming to Adrian and Deran. While we are getting a lot of romantic scenes between them (Animal Kingdom has never shied away from displaying queer intimacy, so yay!), we have to prepare ourselves for some bad stuff. Adrian is working with the Feds, but now that they know he is living with Deran Cody, things are going to get a lot complicated.

While Deran might find a way to understand Adrian’s predicament, Smurf isn’t going to be happy about Adrian’s contact with the Feds. She might even plan to have Adrian killed just like she did Catherine. Ugh! I don’t want to think about it!

Some thoughts and questions:

  • I’m a fan of Frankie. She likes to focus on her own stuff.
  • I won’t be surprised if Mia and her criminal boyfriend decide to attack Joshua.
  • Do you think Smurf’s medical condition is going to be serious?
  • What does Angela want?
  • Kudos to Shawn Hatosy for making Pope’s voice crack when yelling at Smurf. It was a very emotional moment.
  • Vinny Chhibber (who plays Rahul) is amazing in The Red Line. It’s a thought-provoking miniseries executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Greg Berlanti. Go watch it. Be prepared to cry, though.

What did you think of ‘Angela’? Let us know.
