Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 Premiere Date Revealed

Attack on Titan the Final Season

It’s been 84 years… OK, not really, but I’m sure the wait for the final episodes of Attack on Titan has felt that long for many of us! But it won’t be much longer now, as it was finally announced that Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 will premiere January 9, 2022.

The official website for the series dropped a new teaser video for Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 earlier today which revealed the premiere date. In just three short months, it will be the beginning of the end when episode 76, “Sentencing”, debuts on the NHK General channel.

A teaser is meant to tease, so we won’t get that much information from it, but oh my, what a tease! From discussions that I am reading, there is very little they can show that wouldn’t be a massive spoiler for what’s to come, which just makes me all the more excited for the season to release. The brief flashes of all of the remaining characters, the snippets of fights between the Titans, and the music that kind of sounds like a ticking clock will have to tide us over until January.

Now, there aren’t English subtitles on the video, but someone helpfully translated Eren’s voiceover, which goes, “You’ve been waiting for someone. For 2000 years, haven’t you?” I feel like that can only refer to the original Ymir, whom Zeke may or may not have had a vision of as he lay dying in the last episode. There is also a brief shot of Levi, cradled by I think Hange, so Levi did survive the explosion – at least for now. I think this teaser succeeds in driving the hype for the final episodes, especially Reiner vs Eren the Rematch of the Rematch, which looks incredible.

Also, just from the small glimpses that we’ve got, the CGI looks better, the animation looks better (more contrast, less blur), movement looks smoother, and the music remains amazing.

Before the final season premieres, NHK will also air six compilation specials that recap the first 75 episodes. These compilations will also include the OVAs that were included with the spinoff novel Attack on Titan: Lost Girls – “Wall Sina, Goodbye” (focusing on Annie) and “Lost in the cruel world” (focusing on Mikasa) – as well as Attack on Titan: No Regrets (focusing on Levi)The first of the compilation specials airs October 24.

Attack on Titan, created by Hajime Isayama, first debuted in 2009. The final chapter was published April 9 of this year (fan reaction was mixed, to put it nicely), and the final volume of the manga will release on October 19. The first season of the anime premiered in April 2013. With the premiere of Attack on Titan The Final Season in January, it will truly be the end of an era, more than a decade of this series.

I feel much the same way I did when Haikyuu!! ended last year, though I don’t read the Attack on Titan manga. Even shows that I enjoy, I usually don’t feel this same kind of energy going into a finale. I am very excited to see how this story ends.
