Black Lightning 4×11 Review: “The Book of Reunification: Chapter Two”

“The Book of Reunification: Chapter Two”

The Pierce family gets some help from their allies in the battle against Tobias in “The Book of Reunification: Chapter Two.”

After the events of “The Book of Reunification: Chapter One,” the Pierce family’s battle against Tobias (Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III) continues in “The Book of Reunification: Chapter Two.” After regaining her powers, Lightning (Laura Kariuki) recovers a shipment of stolen meta genes with the help of still power-less Anissa (Nafessa Willams). The team-up between the two is fun, but Jennifer’s clear struggle with the unknowing loss of some of her particles in the ionosphere is concerning.

To make matters worse, Tobias wins his mayoral campaign, provides Chief Lopez (Melissa De Sousa) with Lynn’s (Christine Adams) metahuman serums for the police to use against metahumans, and figures out that Jennifer and “JJ” are in fact the same person. Chief Lopez’s acceptance of the metahuman serums despite her dislike of metas will most likely provide additional commentary on the state of the police mirroring the real world in the remaining episodes. For the amount of progress that the Pierce family makes in this episode, Tobias will continue to remain a threat all the way until the final showdown.

TC (Christopher Ammanuel) helps prove that Uriah (McKalin) had nothing to do with Chief Lopez’s trap for Lightning and repairs the relationship between Jennifer and Uriah by setting them up on a date. The friendship between TC and Jennifer continues to remain a strength of the season and it’s a relief to find out that Uriah is in fact a good guy. Unfortunately, Jennifer and Uriah’s date is cut short when Red (Matt Roszak) attacks them, and Jennifer is unable to stop his bullet from hitting Uriah. His death is tragic, but overall unnecessary as Jennifer and the Pierce family don’t need any more motivation to want to stop Tobias.

After a touching reunion with Khalil (Jordan Calloway), Jefferson (Cress Williams) learns that Tobias has Looker (Sofia Vassilieva), a racist metahuman with the ability to control people with a silver substance, on his payroll. He concludes that Looker is controlling the FBI agent in charge of his and Lynn’s cases, Kevin (Jamal Akakpo). It’s strange that Jefferson, like Anissa before him, doesn’t tell Khalil the truth about Jennifer’s changed appearance after he asks about her. It will be interesting to see how he will react once he does learn about it.

Upon learning of Looker’s involvement, Jefferson hatches a plan with Lynn to stop her and prevent Lynn from having to take a plea deal and serve jail time. After the amount of fighting between Jefferson and Lynn this season, it’s great to see the two working together with minimal conflict. It’s also an interesting choice to bring back Looker, as she hasn’t been seen since the show’s second season.

After Lynn and Anissa create a serum designed to help stop Looker’s controlling silver. Jefferson enlists the help of Detective Shakur (Wallace Smith) to help get the serum into Kevin, revealing his identity as Black Lightning in the process. While Jefferson is able to invoke Shakur’s loyalty to Henderson to help him, hopefully, the decision to reveal his identity doesn’t backfire.

Khalil also confronts Looker later in the episode, fighting many of her henchmen as he makes his way to her. Khalil’s fight scenes remain interesting, and Looker’s over-the-top racism makes her easy to hate. Looker attempts to control Khalil, but an exciting sequence inside Khalil’s mind has Khalil and Painkiller fighting Looker and winning the battle. Khalil and Painkiller leave her alive, though poisoned, as an incentive to have her turn on Tobias.

With the help of Anissa, Gambi (James Remar) shows Caruso (Elena Varela) evidence of Monovista’s dealings and enlists her to help recover the stolen emitter inhibiting everyone’s powers. The fact that Caruso is seemingly unaware of Monovista’s dealings and might actually be a good person is surprising and it will be good to have a potential ally inside Monovista. Gambi and Caruso’s discovery that Freeland is filled with Promethium creates an obstacle in locating the emitter and shows why Freeland has been such a target for the ASA and Monovista over the years.

“The Book of Reunification: Chapter Two”

The episode ends with Jefferson and Lynn celebrating their victory over Looker. Lynn becomes excited about the possibility of throwing a wedding party for Anissa and Grace, who unfortunately does not appear anywhere in this episode. Jefferson suggests that they also get remarried, but Lynn brushes off the suggestion. The possibility of Anissa and Grace finally getting a proper wedding is exciting and something that will hopefully come to fruition. Lynn’s refusal of Jefferson’s suggestion is not surprising, especially given how much the two have been fighting this season. Despite that, the love the two have for each other is still evident and the two getting remarried is most likely inevitable.

With two more episodes left of the series, there is a lot left to be resolved in the world of Black Lightning. There is a lot to be done in order to stop Tobias, but the addition of new and former allies will help the cause. Despite the difficult task at hand, the small victory and the promise of celebration in the episode point to a potential satisfying conclusion to the series.
